Mice not breeding

I must have really crummy mice. Guess I have to take a drive to where you guys live because my mice stop breeding if it is over 85 and die if its over 90. Always have. I have had mice a lot longer than I have had snakes. Light has never bothered their cycles just temps.

Hmmm if light is one of the factors than maybe there's where the problem lies.. My hdb is on the first floor.. And there is a covered walkway there.. So there's alot of shade and shadows in the house. And really nt much light in the house. If I turn off all the lights in the afternoon, the house will be quite dark.. Maybe I'll shift the mouse to a sunnier side.. See if it works.. But my only worry is that it'll get too hot.. The dilema!!!

Maybe our mice survives due to evolution? Every generation gets more used to the heat as they evolve? I know for sure if rodents in my country dies at over 90f, we won't have so many pest control companies here doing so well!!

I deffinitely need mice from lines that do not die in temps over 90, and you do know I mean domestic not wild. Wild mice have ways to adapt, domestic have to live or die by what we do for them, there is a BIG difference between wild and domestic mice.

Try can be sterile if they are inbred. Mine don't produce when it gets hot either but it can get pretty hot (in the 100's). I get behind on my feeders due to it sometimes. If they haven't produced for months though they are probably sterile.

Lol too bad I can't ship so far if not I'll senD u some of our mice.

Yeah, heat can cause temporary sterility in male mammals, it is most noted in rabbits, can last 30 to 120 days from the last heat spike. Not sure if you guys knew that. Big reason why my mice and rabbits do not get over 83 if I can help it. Yeah, I just can not afford lab mice (wish I could they sound awesome) or to import from another country. I will probably look into it once we find, buy and own outright our own home but that could take a few years. *mumbles about crummy pet shop mice*

hey at least ur pet shops sell mice openly so you know which ones to ask for. ours, they only sell mice on a hush hush and only sell to customers they know. damnit.. i had to look high and low for these mice.. and i swear i visited close to 50 pet shops. *NO KIDDING*

at last, i found one pet shop willing to sell to me and that is only because i had spent close to 2k on that shop before for my dogs and fishes. they told me pet shops do not openly sell mice..

on the internet, mice are sold for $8 buckaroos a PIECE!!! and those are OLD MICE!!

i think i can get hold of lab mice.. but 20 bucks for one. CRAZY!!

Yeah but what good are mice that kill each other, or die of unknown causes before reproducing or never reproduce then die? In the last 6 months I have spent $3 a piece on at least 20 mince only to have them all do the above. That's about $60 then add in the gas money to drive to buy them, I could have had a couple pregnant female lab mice for all that! Maybe and a buck! I amost want to go back to breeding dwarf hammies.

Well they have alot more hair and probably more expensive well in florida that is.My temp in my snake room stays about 75-85 degrees and they breed non stop.I did have to get rid of one of my males because he wasnt producing he was just eating up the food and taking up room.As far as light , I have my mice racks in my snake room, there is a window , and i useally pull back the curtain and let the sunlight shine in for a couple of days then ill open the window , airing out reasons lol...and let some heat in but i let the curtain back down so it keeps the snlight out..That way they dont over heat.My mice grew up together and its like one big nasty inbred family lol....But hey theres no laew against that..lolOh well I hope this helps!

Actually most don't use hamsters because they are not commercially available as snake food, and some snakes can become addicted and refuse to eat anything else. I do think I will look into gettin Dwarfies again. I liked them and had no troubles breeding them at all.

if the does are pregnant, is the buck still able to mate with them? if she's pregnant and the buck tries to mate, she will push him off right?

Ouch, you must have some really bad luck! My first colony was crap, but my second onwards have all been quite productive.

I figured the problem. My female is now pregnant. It's the lighting timing. Because my house is dark and there is little or no difference day and night.. So maybe tts y the mice didn't breed. I solved it by putting on a night light beside the cage with a timer tt turns off and on after 12 hours. Finally pregnant!!!

During summer mice tend to ,lack of a better term, slow down. Temps, lighting, ect.... It just is.... Glad to see you got a prego

Oh yes, I had a few males that killed their females, then I had a female that killed anything put in with her, then I had some females very much adults die in labor. A couple of times I broke down crying that the mice gods were against me lol.

Oh yes, mice tend to slow down production in the summer mostly due to heat. Its aggravating when you have a good colony and they slow down and you think it might be your fault. Regulating room temp and lighting is a good way to help them. Its actually the extended day light at the longest lit time of the year that hinders them. Its why I like to use lights in a dark room instead of day light.

Congrats to the OP on finding that your female was pregnant. My own female is giving birth RIGHT NOW! Happy Happy me! I plan to let them all grow out as I now have enough pinks for my snakes. I will cull out all but one male from the litter when they are hoppers and will process the adult male because he still bites the mum. I don't care for him much beyond the fact that he is an interesting shade of gray and a tan.
