what makes the best pet

I know you did not ask about this but if you are looking for a low maintenance pet that is hearty and easy to keep and will also interact with you a parakeet is really hard to beat. They live 10+ years, can be left for several days unattended, do not smell, are intelligent, affectionate and have a ton of personality. The only reason I bring this up is I am making the assumption you are looking for a nice cage pet. And in my experience parakeets are second only to snakes in being easy, cheap and low maintenance to keep.

Snakes however are about as easy to keep as you can get. I got my corn so my kids could have a low maintenance cage pet that is safe to handle and easy to keep. I used to own a king snake and though they are equally as easy to keep its temprement was much more unpredictable. I like the corn better as a pet snake for that reason.
 
One problem with many lizards is they are diurnal. So when I am home, at night, the lizards are sound asleep. I only get to see them awake on the weekends!! I like to sit down in the evening and watch a TV show with a pet. If I try that with Isabel the dragon- she's in a coma! A snake is awake.

Not my leos! Mine are still young and easily startled but if I'm very quiet and don't make any sudden movements I can watch them eat, lick calcium, and wander around just like I can with my snake, but neither are ever out in the daytime.
 
My choice would be a Splendida or Florida Kingsnake because I would want my snake to be able to eat your cornsnake. Before, you kill me I am only kidding. I love my corns as much as my kings and milks. I can not say any thing about Leos because I have never owned one. California and Splendida kings make good pets or I just got lucky. Also, Honduran and Black milksnakes are good pet snakes as are many other kings and milk for the beginner.

P.S. I am truly only kidding about the eating thing. The only thing my snakes eat are veggies wrapped in a white or colored fur skin with a nice pink handle. :laugh01:
