Minimum Wage Jobs

I wouldn't have the heat on if it weren't for the snakes being in the living room.
If the snakes have their own heating in the tanks, then you don't need the room heating on for them. I've found that the ambient temp doesn't make any difference to them as long as they have a warm spot at the top end of their safe range where they can digest.

I don't know how to drive. No car payments. I think I had cable like two years ago or something.... I can't remember. I eat just about all my meals with my other half, except for when I work longer than six hours at work. By then, I just have to eat. As for the snakes, they don't have individual heat. I was going to have a rack built but then I couldn't pay my step-dad for the materials so he could build it. So until I save up for that, I have to heat the entire room.

On the plus side, having the entire room heated lets me keep the turtle and lizard heaters lower wattage because I don't have to heat the air as much. With the turtles, hermit crabs, bugs, and the leopard geckos, I don't even have to use heat because the room stays warm enough. It's just the ATB, bearded dragons, agama and fish that need heat. With the fish, I can use lower wattage to get up to 79 degrees. Without heaters, the water gets to be about 75 degrees. Of course, condensing down to smaller tanks helps. Also, once all of the animals are in the right room, I can make sure the vents in that room are wide open and close the bedroom, kitchen, and most of the living room vents. I think I'll leave the bathroom and one of the living room vents open so that I have at least a little heat coming in. The reptile room door is closed all the time so it takes little to keep it heated. At night during the winter I pile on a million blankets when I sleep so I don't think I'll suffer there.

I really do want to move to a cheaper apartment, but like I said before, I have to save up to do that.

Can you see if the electric company can average your bills? Can you stop having a landline phone? If you don't eat, more or less, what other expenses do you have besides electricity and rent? There must be a food shelf near you- except you said food isn't an issue.

I don't have a phone line. Just my cell and it's as low as it can go and still have voicemail. I need to have that seeing I'm still applying for jobs and my phone is off during work. I'm thinking about dropping my internet, which is $40-something a month. I have wi-fi at work and at my other half's. All I have to do is not pay it when the bill comes and reconnect it when I'm ready to, no fees or anything.

Here's my current, basic expenses:

Rent $750
Electricity $160 this month (hopefully lower in the coming months)
Food $0-120 depending on month
Animal stuff $0-40 depending on month (not including when I have to buy mice again)
Cellphone $58
Internet $45-50 I think
RTD (bus) $10, just in case I actually have to use it
Misc $20 (this usually includes when I have a hurting tooth, replace clothes, etc)

Total is $1208 for this month. I can wheedle it down to about $1028 if I can get the electricity down and cut the internet. That's about 4.5 weeks gross of pay. Doesn't work out just yet. Lol.

Looks like rent is the killer. My _house payment_ is $200 less than that...

Have you looked in hospitals? They always have lots of no-skills jobs, that at least have good benefits. And many pay for further training.

$120.00 for food is high IMO.
If I were you I would find fosters for the critters, I would educate myself on ways to cut the food bill, I would cut the internet and go the library route..done that...it's not too hard.
Find another job...even handy man..or woman stuff..pick up a house to clean?
Take a notebook and EVERY TIME you spend 5 cents or more write it down for one month...it will open your eyes fast.
Good luck!!!

Pay as you go phone are more problematic than helpful. Twice I've had them and both times I hated it. One had the same number given to more than just me. Still trying to figure that one out. The second number belonged to someone who had an extremely jealous girlfriend and no matter how many times I said I didn't know the guy, she would call me at all hours to yell at me about sleeping "with her man". Even though the only connection I had to the guy was the phone number.

As for the food bill, I was including other things like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and what have you in that. I just forgot to mention it. Sorry about that. As for fosters for the animals, I see no reason to do so. I don't trust other people to take care of my animals, let alone strangers. I doubt that I would get half of the animals back. It's either I sell them or keep them. They really aren't costing me anything extra except electricity and I'm working on that. I generally buy the same foods whether I have lizards or not. The snakes are covered until I run out of mice and I can save up for that. I will be asking for a raise or more hours after working for four weeks, so that will help. I do expect to get one or the other because I'm giving the job my all. It's just that I'm in a "hold-out" period where I'm going to have to cut things until I get that raise.

On the plus side, it's a lot easier to save on electricity during the winter. I can't tolerate the summer without A/C, but I can go without heat in every room. That's why we invented blankets. I only need the reptile room to stay warm. The rest of us mammal in the house can wear clothes like we did when the furnace broke and the landlord took three months to fix it.

do you need any financial help?? i can help ya with money..... i worked and tried to live like you and i odnt want anyone to go through that.

Are you on budget billing for your electricity? I know that helps us immensely.

The only other thing I would suggest is trying to find a cheaper apartment if that's a possibility (I know that kind of thing can be very difficult with security deposit, sometimes first/last month and other expenses involved in moving). Our house plus utilities are a bit less than $750.

I've done the minimum wage dance and it's not fun :( I wish you luck.

I really don't know how Amercians survive with such low minimum wage, it just doesnt make sense to me.
I get minimum wage in Canada and it is 10.25 and I think that is bad sometimes, so I guess I have it pretty good.

I would look into food stamps and housing solutions if I were you also if you do get this job ask if it would be possible for more hours and even ask if you would be able to move up to full time after your probation period.

I think two jobs would be difficult having to deal with shift work from both jobs being part time (seeing how my job gives me different shifts all the time, sometimes only a couple days in advance).

Good luck <3

lucky, it's still $8 here. which to me, is a bleeping JOKE! my TIME is worth more than that!

OP, it's really crummy that you may have to live on minimum wage, but you will make it through. there's lots of good advice here, don't stress too much on bills!

Thanks everyone. I start second week here at work today (in about nine minutes). l0ck_0ff, I couldn't ask you to be responsible for my bills. I really do appreciate the offer though. If things get too bad, I'll just have to part with some of the reptiles. We'll see how it goes. :)

i wouldnt be responsible lol i mean i dont have millions but i do have plenty of money saved up for whatever may happen... i get almost everything discount on base so i live cheaply, and i have money saved up to get a new truck but if i have to give my money up to help someone i will.... new things aren't as important to me as seeing someone be happy... i have already done alot for who i could and i have saved and saved for stuffi want but i always had parted with my money to help someone, i paid my sisters car bill, paid my moms credit card bill and my friends i helped one get a new car and anotheri helped pay his rent and another i helped get a whole new nursery for his newborn.... i liked seeing all theirs smiles and hearing the thanks yous over them seeing me with a new laptop or a new truck or new clothes everyweek, when they can barely afford anything.... idk if that makes any sense at all the way i put it? but i just would rather be the one people could come instead of being that person everyone looked at as a " snob" because i have everything i could possibly get my hands on. i dont wanna be like that or be portrayed like that. so i help who i can. i always give to homeless.... i was actually in chicago and i seen a guy sitting on the corner he looked like he didnt have a home and he was begging for anything, so i asked him where he lived and what he did, he said he didnt have a home or a job so i told him to hango n while i went to mcdonalds and got him a bag of food. i also gave him a few packs of cigarettes and 100 dollars ( not saying that 100 dollars will go far) but i figured it would help him a little bit...
just dont wanna see struggles. i hate seeing that.

Wow, lOck Off you are one heckuva person No wonder you're a Marine! Thanks. I have had a truly lousy day and you just made it better. ((lOck Off))

double post ( my apologies) when shopping for food dont go hungry. always eat before shopping for food. because when your hungry everything looks good. so you buy everything lol

if worst comes to worst i will send you some MRE's some tasty and others not so tasty.... being in the military i have learned how to stretch food....

but we always usually trade our stuff. mainly the non smokers trade cigarettes for stuff. like i trade recruit tape for cigarettes essentially recruit tape is something we all have so i can always borrow some from another marine.

stretching food ideas?

make or buy fooods that will keep you full longer such as breads and pastas. shopping on sale of coourse and buy in bulk. oatmeal is a filling food too. always make your own food.... you can always take canned foods and spice them up in your own way... or stuff like hamburger helper do your own spice twist on it and make a large amount so you have some for others days and you can do that with a few meals so you dont have to have 1 thing for dinner every night of the week. you can have lets say chicken pasta ttuesday and hamburger helper wednesday and switch off?

im trying my best here lol

I did go shopping the other day. Spent $75 but that will hold me over from now until the end of November. That is if I can get the darn kitten to stop eating the toilet paper. Lol. I bought tuna helper, biscuits for biscuits and grave (one batch will last me two days), sandwich stuff which won't last longer than two weeks, but I think I can manage to afford another loaf of bread for PB&J. I'm sure I have that much money sitting in one of my purses. I can't remember what else I bought besides trash bags, but everything will last until December. Maybe even longer seeing I haven't actually eaten anything in my house for the past six months. I'm also at my other half's house. Lol.

lol my cats eat the toilet paper too and tuna is a really good idea also becausee no cooking involved.

if your a smoker i would think about quiting.
