Hello everyone,

I am recently a proud owner of my very first baby corn snake (first snake ever, actually).

My baby's name is, Ares. He's almost four months old.

I would like to know if anyone can tell me by his markings and coloring, what type of corn snake he is.

By looking at photos, my sister and I think he might be a candy corn snake.

Can anyone tell me for sure?

I look forward to talking with everyone and getting to know all I can about how to take care of my little reptile baby.

Looks like a pretty little Amel (short for Amelanistic, meaning lacking black colouration) to me! I think there's too much orange between the saddles to be classed as a candy cane :)

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your first corn snake, but beware, the addiction can grab you fast! ;)

Hello Susielea and thank you for the welcome.

To be honest, I was scared to death of snakes. It didn't matter if they were venomous or not, I would cringe at the mere mention of them.

My daughter's friend got him at first when she moved in with my daughter and boyfriend. I mustered up the courage to hold him when my daughter brought him over to show me.

I fell in love with him.

When the friend moved out of my daughters apartment, she couldn't take the snake with her, so I bought it from her.

And I love him to death.

Talk about a 360 degree turnaround from being scared to death of snakes?? I have to try hard not to mother him to death.

Ha ha, I've never had a problem with slithering critters, I used to catch Slow Worms when I was a kid and they've always facinated me! But, my Mum is deathly afraid of anything without legs that crawls on its belly and still wont touch any of my babies, although she will now spend time in the same house as them, which she wouldn't do when I got my first corn, way back when, lol!

Sounds like Ares has found a great home with you! :)

If my mom were still alive, I have no doubt she wouldn't even come into my house because of Ares. LOL

I think Ares is happy with me. He hasn't yet tried to escape. However, I know it's in their nature to try.
 
Conrats on your first snake! I love to hear stories like this. It's a shame when people let pre-conceived notions about something spoil what could be a great experience. I'm glad you're past your fear, and have a chance to enrich your life with one of my favorite animals.

I am very much a newbie with taking care of snakes so if anyone has any advice for me, I am all ears.
 
Looks like an Amel to me too, Congrats on your purchase! People like you make me proud, getting over your fear. All it takes is a run in with one of these beautiful creatures and your hooked, that's all it took for me! Welcome to your new addiction!

Yes, he is my baby now. And I love him as much as I do my two human babies (18 and 8 years old)

That's the best part about snakes! They're easy. Most important is a good setup. A secure tank with no spots for escape, proper, monitored temps, hides on the warm and cool sides, and fresh water. Once he/she is a bit bigger, you'll only feed once a week, maybe less.
I don't have any pets right now, besides my snake. If I want to stay overnight, or stay out for a weekend, or even go away for a week, Snakey will be fine as long as he has water.
Other than daily checking, changing his water, and feeding once every 7-10 days, I spot clean poop once a week or so, and totally change the aspen probably every 8 weeks. Other than that, we just hang out!

I would say so but i'm not the morph expert, i've been doing some studying on morphs to brush up a bit but i'd still let someone else give their opinion
 
Well, he's four months old and I was told by a Vet to give him a pinkie every 6 days or so. I have no problem getting him to eat.

I have him in a 10 gallon aquarium right now with a secure top with airholes. I made sure there were no holes big enough for him to escape out of.

I put him down fresh water everyday as sometimes I find him swimming in it or he poops in it. LOL

I have papertowel down right now because I couldn't find the right stuff. He has a pocky box for shelter on the cold side.. a little mouse house as a hidey hole on the warmer side.

This is the thing I am a big mixed up on:

I am not sure what kind of heating to use. I have heard mixed things.

Some said a heating rock.. some said a heating pad.. some say put a heating pad under one side of his tank..

right now I have a heating pad there.. and he goes back and forth between the cooler end and the warmer end...

But I am concerned now that winter is approaching.. will he be ok.. sometimes I take him out of his hidey hole on the cooler side and he's very cold.. and I get concerned.

Told you I mother him half to death.. lol
 
oh and the last couple of weeks, I noticed that when he eats his pinkie, I don't see much of a "bump" anymore... so is it time to start giving him fuzzies (isn't that what they are called?) or is that still too big?
 
First of all, a heat pad is the best main source of heat, you need to monitor the heating pad with a rheostat or a thermostat and the heating pad should go on the bottom of the tank and cover 1/3 of the bottom of the tank

I would feed double pinkies. It's hard to tell the size of your snake by the pictures without something to compare it to. I would go to walmart and find a nice food scale that measures in grams. Mine was $20 and then i would recommend to feed your baby according to this feeding plan

A heat pad can get to 120F if you don't use anything to control it and you only want it about 85F. So this thread talks about different stats to use (I wouldn't recommend the first one, the Repti-Temp Rheostat by ZooMed though) but take a look at the whole thread and find one in your price range, and one that works for you
 
I use a table lamp dimmer from lowes it was $14 and it works great for me. Your little Ares is very cute! I used to be afraid of snakes too but now I am hooked on these guys and I have only had one for a week now.

A leviton dimmer is mentioned in the other thread, it's $11 at home depot
