Hi & A Question, Please!!!!

I will be checking out that stats thread for sure.

And I can try giving him two pinkies. At the same time? or one-one day and about three days later another one?

feed him one and as soon as the first one is all the way down, feed him the second one

Thank you so much. I kind of figured that was what you guys meant, but wanted to ask anyway.

See? I am a total ignoramus right now about all this LOL

Ok, plans for the weekend.. go to walmart, buy a food scale that weighs in grams.. then get whatever proper heating source works best. I will look into all that.

I want my little baby comfortable.

I appreciate all this advice. Sorry I am coming across like an idiot.

We'd rather have you ask the questions than not care :) You said you have a heating pad, that will work. Just make sure that it covers 1/3 of the bottom, give or take. The important thing is getting something to control your heat source. Without some kind of stat, you risk burning your little guy and nobody wants that. They have non-digital scales at walmart but i just went with the $20 one cause it's accurate and easy to use and it has a digital readout (which i like). When i went there i asked if they had a scale that measured in grams and they looked at me like i was retarded and they didn't think they had any but i said "what about a food scale" and things started coming together for them lol. So just check the food section cause that's the only section that they are in lol

I bought a cheap ZooMed thermostat. R500 I think. It's kept the temp steady for 2 1/2 years.
I'll be upgrading when I build the new viv.

First off, welcome to the forum! Second off no one thinks you are "a total ignoramus". It is much better to ask questions that you are unsure on than to do the wrong thing. I am agreeing so far with everything that Haarstad is telling you right now. Also the search function on this site is awsome! It takes a little messing with to get the results you are seaching for but does wonders! So with most questions try there and if you still are unsure then please, just ask! :)

Thanks Tinkerbeller for the welcome and the advice. I have been finding things by the search function that's been so very helpful. That thing is awesome lol

Hello & welcome! Congrats on your new addition!
One of the biggest myths out there is the heat rock. Almost any pet store employee will tell you to buy one but they are a total no-no for snakes and they aren't good for a number of other animals that the pet store will tell you you need them for. A heat mat, ceramic heat emitter or heat cable are all good sources of heat, depending on your individual situation one might be better than the other. But generally for just one tank in a fairly cold area, a heat mat is the easiest to find, least expensive method that works well. Pretty much any of those you choose will need a rheostat or thermostat.

Your snake is for sure an Amel. I'm fairly sure that a CandyCane is just a selectively bred regular amel. So they are both amels, one has just been worked with to achieve a certain look. If it's a candycane then would depend more on how it looks than on the genes a snake carries, if that made sense? Pretty little snake either way!

Thanks for the welcome Tavia.

yeah, I recently read that the heat rock can actually burn your snake etc, so i definitely won't even consider that option. I will stick with the heating pad but find a way to get a rheostat or thermostat.

He will be comfortable for the winter months coming.

I swear, I spoil the little guy so much.

Thanks, I think he is beautiful too.

Welcome and gratz on your snakey. I would also say amel but I would also agree that a heating pad is the best way to go. If you want a good dimmer make one yourself here is a link http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19168 I made one last night! Its not however 7$ anymore its 10$ so if you dont trust yourself with electric then its pretty much just as cheap to buy a premade one. But I like to make things myself so I can trust them.

Thank you Nitelion, I will check it out for sure. And thanks for the welcome.

Welcome!! I'm a new snake owner as well...and also from MS! I've been scared of/fascinated by snakes my whole life....and I never thought i would have one as a pet. But then one day, I thought, why not. So I started doing snake research online and settled on a corn. And it was love at first sight. I love my little pink worm! He's a sweet boy.

Thanks for the welcome. I welcome you as well.

I am finding this site very informative. And everyone has been so helpful and friendly.

Albino is just a name that people started calling Amels, Amel (Amelanistic) means they lack black pigment. So albino is an Amel

This Leviton Dimmer is only 11 dollars, so if she wants to save money and buy a rheostat, it would almost be better off just to buy this. It comes in black or white, i have the black :) lol

But For 23 dollars you could have a thermostat that Rexracer mentioned and that's not too expensive. Thermostats are less of a hassle, I wouldn't say that a Rheostat is a hassle cause i've never adjusted mine since i brought it home but others would say it's a hassle lol. You really need to check out the stat thread though cause it tells you when and when not to use a rheostat...

wow, did not know that, so my albino is really an Amelanistic?.. cool:) so is it correct to say albino?

Yes, it's correct but you may find people correcting you cause the actual term is Amelanistic and some people buy their snake as an "Albino" so we try to let you know that it's an Amel, you can call it either though. It would be the same as calling my normal corn a "Classic Corn". People use different names to draw more people to them but personally i like the sounds of Amelanistic better but i think more people know what albino means and that's why it is used, but use what you want, just figured i'd let you know :)
