I was in our local National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday and I was very surprised to see a Northern Water snake (nerodia sipedon).

I get out every weekend and I haven't seen a snake for the last six weeks. Recently we've had several nights in the upper 30's and a few frost warnings.

I've seen them basking on ice! I had a photo of that from a couple of years ago but can't find it. It is amazing what those buggers can stay awake through, though!

neat :) Last wild snake I saw was a ringneck my friend caught a year ago :(

Ya gotta get out there!

I saw 2 wild copperheads lastnight.......it could just be because there my friends tho

Could be! How old are they? Will they let you get pics for us?

that must be a chilly snake! are you near Arlington by chance?

16 miles south as the crow flies, or a long paddle down the river.

If you find the pics please post them! I've seen turtles on the ice but never a snake.

Ummmm I may be able to get some pics. Age wise not sure how old they were when he caught them but he has a few that hes had for gosh 3-5 years

I know I need to get out more but its hard to go herping when you don't really know what you are doing. Last thing I want is to get bit by a poisonous snake. I hear alot about people seeing Copperheads (I think?) or Milk Snakes, that's about it. Would love to snag at least pics of some wild milks but no clue where to go or how to go about looking.

Search for and join your local herpetological society. They'll be glad to help educate a herper on your local fauna. You'll find some people who know where to go, you can probably go with them for field studies.
Another bonus, stay active in the group and in turn you can help educate others.
