Ernie Caldwell Diaries.....

Big fellow.....

Got the tape measure out. Being the only guy not afraid of snakes I got little help but he was 71" with some kinks and a not so straight tail. He was about 74" or so.
After spending the day with me I turned him lose, snapped a few more pics and we parted.....

SADLY.......

more than likely this is the last post on Ernie Caldwell Diaries.

We all know the economics of our times. Contractors are bidding these jobs ever lower just to get the work. Well Mid-State paving bid this to low, cut corners which led to sub-par work and having to repeat and re-do many phases. They owed all the subs well into 6 digits, including my firm. Last Tuesday their bond company took over, Friday shut the project down. Shut all their projects down. Sixty-six people lost their jobs Friday. The owners lose all the equipment and, this is harsh, their homes and cars. The Super on the job lost his house Wednesday.

It was a sad and somber feeling. These clowns have been a pain in my a$$ for a year and a half. But....but, I've been at this job for four and a half years, three have been with these guys. I know them. As we stood around one last time we said, "....hope to see ya around." I had a tear in my eye for them. I still have a job although it will be slim pickins and a struggle for awhile. The Army Corps of Engineers decided they didn't need a full time inspector. So the S. Florida job will be drive down, take a few test and leave. The bond company can decide to let us finish the job. There is little left for my part and I know the job. There is a meeting at noon but.....it's rare not to change out everybody.

Keep your eyes open on the boards, I may need to have a fire sale myself to thin the collection down.

I hope you have enjoyed this thread. It has to one of the longest running (on and off of course). I haven't enjoyed field herping like this in 25 years or so. Thanks to all who took the time to look and post.

See ya round the boards.

Good luck. I hope you find another job soon.

I loved seeing all the wildlife that surrounded you.

What a rough way to end a job--and my favorite thread! I hope things will go well with you, and that you don't find yourself in the position of having to sell off your own snakes. I really hope and pray you find another GOOD job, soon, and that you won't have to go through the difficult process of worrying, downsizing your life, and becoming another unemployment number in a not-so-great economy. It's sad enough to hear about your co-workers losing their jobs, and the owners/managers losing even their homes and vehicles! What a tragedy for everyone concerned.

Good luck to you in all of your endeavors. Your thread has brightened my world, engaged my senses, taught me things I didn't know, and showed me the beauty of a state I've never seen in anything but pictures.

I'm hoping you'll be able to start a new herping thread for us, soon, filled with more of your wonderful photos and narrative :).

Gosh, Craig. The older I get the more important is life, health, home, employment, security,.....I really feel for your ex-workbuddies.

Oh, it would be hard not to take so many things home...lol

When I wrote this I had only had enough time to go through looking at the pictures. Now that I have time to read your last post, I am so sorry that things have gone the way they have for you and your co-workers. I hope you find another job that you enjoy doing that pays well enough to fund your hobbies.

Craig I have only just had enough time to get caught up on this thread. I am very saddened to read that so many hard working people have lost their jobs, and that some even lost their homes etc.

As well I truly hope that you will be able to find adequate enjoyable employment and return to the board with another life enriching thread for both yourself and the rest of us. I am going to miss reading this thread, it's wonderfully written prose and the beautiful pictures.

I wish only the best to you and I thank you again for the time and effort you took to make this thread as it honestly enriched my life and was something I looked forward to reading like a great novel.

Yep, we're back...

Site opened back up in early February. It has just warmed up enough for reptiles to move in the last couple of weeks. Only one snake, a racer, smashed on the road. Turtles have been on the move lately. A small softshell. And I was going to the creek to turn him lose, I found a nifty Three Striped Mud.

Oh ya, the good day....

After leaving the bridge I found this outstanding Florida Box. The batteries were dieing in the camera so these pics are not clear. But look at the golden throat on this gentlemen.

Also, I went to Rock Ridge today, more pics on that thread....

So, Horseshoe Creek....it has been 'helped' to look like that....or preserved/allowed to continue to look like that?
It looks very nice and wildlife friendly.

The second pic on the last post is a repeat; should have been the cat prints.....
Then I finally got a Five-lined skink to stay still long enough for a shot.....:dancer:

Yeah, I know this is a late reply, but that is actually a six-lined racerunner and not a skink.

First time I have noticed this thread. Makes me feel melancholy thinking of all the animals that will likely be killed by traffic when the road is finished..... :awcrap:
