Ernie Caldwell Diaries.....

Thanks folks.....

So, Horseshoe Creek....it has been 'helped' to look like that....or preserved/allowed to continue to look like that?
It looks very nice and wildlife friendly.

It looked a little different when we opened Eric but I thnk it looks better with the wrip-wrap (Rocks). They act like a filter keeping the water a bit cleaner and allowing the plants to be healthier.

Yeah, I know this is a late reply, but that is actually a six-lined racerunner and not a skink.

First time I have noticed this thread. Makes me feel melancholy thinking of all the animals that will likely be killed by traffic when the road is finished..... :awcrap:

Good eye Rich. I still haven't come to terms with getting old and wearing glasses yet. I still can't see it on the puter.

WOOT! More Ernie Caldwell Diary entries! My fav thread :). That funny turtle at the start of today's entries is CUTE!

Aw thanks little lady. That turtle was not so cute when I picked em up and relocated him. Softshells are nasty.

This just made my day to see this thread back alive this morning!!

Thanks again...gee if I wasn't already married.:p

Catching up a bit.....

Rained on Tuesday and I had a feeling these guys would be on the move. These are pics of two different Ribbon Snakes less than 100ft apart. The first two are one, the last two the second snake.

This is not EC......

I don't want to start a new thread for these pics so I'll post em here. This is on the way to the Polk South County Jail in Frostproof, Florida. I have found three DOR Corns on this road and today this breaks my heart. I have no love for Racers. They are not good pets, and bite every chance they get. But this still bites.
Not sure if this was dumb luck or if this male was chasing the female.

First pic you see the DOR female. At about 1 o'clock you see right on the line the male.
How do I know it was a female? In the second and third pic you can see she was full of eggs.
Four and five is the male. And you can see better how close together they were.
R.I.P. guys......

Poor guys
I hate seeing any reptile left on the road.
I've jumped out of a car once in the middle of a minor highway just to save a little turtle cross the road. Many people where upset with me for doing that, but I felt good for the rest of the day :)

It's what we do.:)

That is like me here in my town, there was a garter on one of the main drags and I just had to save him so I got out and chased him around on the road in traffic until I caught him and released him in the tall grass of the field he likely came from.

I got honked at, yelled at and nasty looks...but definitely worth it!

No pics but a story.....

Last week the lead for the county calls me at the office and tells me a yahoo swerved and hit what he thinks is an Indigo and needs an ID. I'll be there in 30 minutes. Phase 2 is starting and the relocation of gopher tortoises is in full swing. So he has already called the biologist on site. We arrive at the same time. I dump the snake out and to my relief it is a racer. The "biologist" says and I quote, "Ya, looks like an Indigo. Could be cottonmouth or a rat snake." I AM DUMBFOUNDED! Not trying to be an ass I slowly, quietly say I think it is a racer. She looks at me over her glasses and asked and I quote, "What makes you think it is a racer?" What do you say to that w/o looking like an egotistical jerk. I say I've seen a lot of snakes in my day. "Well I have a B.S. in Biology and Enviromental blah, blah, blah..." I'm not listening at this point. "And I'm freezing it for a DNA test." "Why?" I asked. "It is a racer." "Why should I listened to you." she asked. My patients are short now. "Because I've been herping in this state longer than you've been on this planet."
"Well I'm 26." she says standing up straight. My final retort...."I started in 1979 or 80, maybe that four year degree can help ya with the math."

So what happened in the end??? Did she get her way or did she listen to you? Gosh, I hate that those with degrees sometimes , in arrogance, use it to hide their ignorance.

Glad to see that this thread is still trucking! :)

What a little snit! No Doubt she has issues with getting people to listen to her so that is why she has the degree, and now she tries to sling it around almost like a "weapon"...."You have to listen to what I say because....degree..." I have met many people with those types of issues over the years.

And Yes, what ever happened in the end, did she freeze for DNA or did she believe you in the end.?

I left before the others.....

and haven't been back yet. I am gathering slides now (thanks a ton to Bill Love) and am putting together a presentation made for the construction field.

I'm gonna dig this old thread up and probably get chastized for it but.....the reason I am is with the shortage of Coral anti-venom and finding three out at EC, I'm trying my best to talk the ranchers into allowing some field herping on the land to herp for said Coral snakes. If anyone is interested keep eyes peeled for updates here.

And I hope if you've never seen this thread you enjoy.

Wow, thanks for bringing it back up. It was so long that I had to read it in chunks. I love your photos! You sure found some interesting creatures.
