Hi all,
I just got a new snake.... well, my dad got it as a gift for me...
Don't know how old he/she is.... or what sex it is... but tell me what you think..
I have experience with cornsnakes but not with ball pythons..... should not be that hard right? this website has a lot of help.
and oh, I'd appreciate some name suggestions please? I can't think of a unisex name.

We recently were given a baby ball python. My husband has been researching them for the last month. I know that their temp and humidity needs to remain constant for them to be healthy. Any drastic change in temp can cause healthy problems. Also ball pythons are known to be very picky eaters and can go on hunger strikes for up to 8months. Even with all that said, they are wonderful snakes and we are very happy with our lil lady. We named her Lady J!
You have some very beautiful snakes!

Thank you so much!
I've been wanting to get a ball python for a long time now but my health has gotten in the way for a few years, but now, I feel like I can do it and instead of another corn, i went with the python, especially since my sister who stays away from snakes, about a couple of years ago liked the adult one my friend had only because it was less active than the corn.

Good luck with yours....
It was easy for me as i have all the leftover supplies from my corn, however, i do need to buy lightbulbs as i never used those before and another thermostat.
Any idea of a reliable site i can purchase these?

If you haven't been there already, ball-pythons.net is an awesome forum. Very helpful, and quite a few stickied threads in the husbandry section to give you all the info you'd need. :)

Kayte,
Thank you so much for the info, I just bookmarked the page and im on my way of registering there.

ball-pythons.net is definitely a good place to go! They're also a very friendly group of people :)
Ball pythons are super fun, I love mine to death!
Beautifullywild is right when saying they can't handle temp drops very well. I keep my whole room around 80 degrees just for him (and the frillie). Warm side at 90, humidity at around 60 and you should have a happy ball python :D
They're also a lot more active than people will give them credit for!
And also, your little guy is SUPER cute. I'd say only a few months old max. Definitely a 2011.

I noticed you mention light bulbs.. please don't put lights on your ball python. That will dry out their air and cause health issues. They like under belly heat just like corns :)

Thanks for the info,
I meant heat lamps, or incandescent lights that i see everyone talk about.
Are those not necessary?
Just a UTH is enough?

As long as its on something to control it(dimmer or thermostat) a UTH will be great. Sure heat lamps will work but they will dry out the air fast and a bp needs good humidity.

I wouldn't use a heat lamp just because it will dry out the air. If you live somewhere humid it may not be a big deal, but I know here in CO it causes a lot of issues. A UTH is all that he needs, but for display purposes a regular strip light like those for under cabinets works well. I use them in my cages so I can see into them in the day time.

Yeah, like nitelion says, ball pythons love humidity, I like to see mine at a constant 60-65% with higher (70%) during shedding. A thermostat set to 90 degrees for the UTH will be perfect for your ball :)
