?'s about my feeder mice I need advice

I just have 4 corns. The rack has enough space for 3 more, but I am going to breed this season so I'll have some babies to feed. I also sell some mice on the side so they can pay for themselves. When you make your rack you'll want to plan for some grow out tubs if you haven't already.

for sure Good news is I found some pinks local rather cheap at 50 cent each gonna grab 500 in the morning

Doing the pinky dance today woke up checked in on the mice found 4 little pinks and momma looks like she is still a bit swollen its been close to 40 days since i started the colonies hopefully none will get eaten I have a good supply of pinks ATM so will let these 4 grow to fuzzy.hopefully this is the start of them all ready to deliver

That's great. I was gonna reply to this earlier and forgot. I have never seen a male mouse kill a baby and have seen them readily adopt litters that are not theirs. You do have to be careful sometimes when mixing mice or adding new ones to a colony. Males will fight and kill other males introduced to the colony if they perceive them as competition. Females introduced to a colony will usually have some catty fights as the existing females teach them the pecking order. If a male dies and you put a replacement male in his colony the females will sometimes accept the substitute, but other times can kill or maim him.
It really helps if you have to put mice from different colonies together, to get a new cage that is "neutral" and then they will all be in a new territory instead of having strangers invading their "home turf"

It's kind of a shame there food for my snakes there actually pretty cool to watch, And have a better work ethic them most people I know. lol

Most people I know, too.

I set up my cam to watch them so far so good mom and the others are just piled on them for warmth and security I will wait to change there water tomorrow so I don't disturb them.

Last weekend I was cleaning and setting up some new breeder colonies. Over the next few days in one of the new set ups, I found two dead mice. I can't remember if I mixed that one from two different holding pens or not. No more have been killed/died and there is a litter of pinks in there too. First time mommie, so I'll leave them alone for a another week. Depending on which ones were killed, I may just hold back from the litter to build the colony up to the size I want. A 1.6 colony.

I've only had one colony were the babies were eaten by the first time mommie. That one hasn't done it since then.

I get more cute ones from Jen tomorrow!

after a bunch of reading I make sure to clean one at a time so I don't mix any up. Now that I know I don't have to pull the Males. I can pre set up the tanks I was putting them in and have them ready to go. I checked the Monitor and can see 2 more pinks so she has had 6 baring none were eaten last night I'm thinking she is probably done. Several others in other tanks look like there gonna explode so I'm hoping I'll have some more in the morning.

I see you and Jen are from the same state I wish I had a snake breeder for corns here in Md. I know someone has to be doing it here, if they are there hiding lol

Jen has some beautiful snakes. I've gotten a few hatchlings from her. I plan on my first snake breedings next year. Nothing new and exciting, but more to get some experience.

Best of luck with the mice. Remember the first litter is often smaller than later litters, so don't be surprised if the next time there are a lot more pinkies.

It is really interesting, I didn't put some of the youngens out of a colony when I should have, and they were there in the pile with the pinkies, keeping them warm. When I pulled them, there was lots of squeaking till the adults got them rearranged to keep them warm. Looks like I've got more to pull tomorrow.

I have 1 female in one tank and 2 in every other tank that look like there gonna explode several of them are frantic about keeping the sleeping nest full of paper shreds so I suspect I'll have a few more dropping over night. Kind of exciting actually I know I'd catch flack from my troops big old combat Marine corp Sgt. excited over mice babies it's all good tho

Haha! To be honest, my mice have come to a hault except for 2. I'm gonna feed off both colonies when my weanlings get big enough to breed. Then I'm not gonna have any production for at least a month. It's pretty frustrating to have to feed them everyday then all of the sudden they stop producing. But after then, I am going to be over-producing. Good thing too, cause I'll need the pinks.

I've read you need to refresh your colonies every year, as production drops around a year old. I hope to get a rotation going, so new one started every month.

Yeah, I do it sooner. One colony is older(and they are fancy mice) than the other and they completely stopped. The feeder colony could keep going but they look old and I figure I might as well replace them too.

Yeah I have a plan set so I don't run out of breeders, but you know how that goes. I believe it starts with (even the best laid plans) I should say I'm hoping to take weans out selecting a mouse from each tank to start new colonies as I get through a few cycles. I'll feed off the breeders as new breeders start up. It looks good on paper now if reality goes with the plan we should be ok lol

been waiting on 5 females the last couple day to drop there babies I came home today and found them all but one did One of the mice had 12 little ones amazing that many pinkies inside that little mouse anyhow they are going good now and so far none that I can tell eaten I want to thank everyone for the information given to me Helped me a great deal my first litter of 6 are getting big close to fuzzy size I figure couple more days till they just fuzz up then Ill pull them.

Congratz EpicD. Just wait until your mice drop 15, then 22 on you. Some mice have larger litters... well for lack of a better term... They "seem" to stretch their insides as they age.

Anywho Congratz...Buzz

Ty Buzz I am have been watching them the mother takes great care of them constantly cleaning them. I never thought much of mice till now. haven.t seen the others in the colony do much other then lay in there with them for warmth, but seem to all be ok with the little ones. I do have a question there is another female in there who will give birth probably tonight as big as she is and she can barely walk. will she make her own nest or just drop hers with the others? I gather they know there own babies by scent rite?

She'll probably have them in the nest with the others. Both mothers will nurse all of them and take care of them. Some times they'll move some to another nest, but they usually end up all in one big pile.

Congrats on the babies.

Awesome Thanx for the reply Pugsley ,did you get your new mice? I wish I had a way to tell the females apart would help knowing whats had what and when to expect the next batch I guess a ball park idea is better then nothing I have 300 pinks ATM so I will let all of the ones on this round in 5 of the colonies grow to fuzzy and sub adults and see where I'm at for pinks at that point. I think a couple of the colonies may have got a late start of have eaten the pinks all were started the same day close to 40 45 days ago actually isn't bad having the staggered now that I think about it.

Yeah, I got them, 16 all together. Turned out 13 males and 3 females! So, I'll be using all of the males and slowing getting rid of the other males. I think I've genetics from 4 different breeders now, so I shouldn't have to worry about inbreeding. Over the holidays, I'm building new racks for my mice colonies, so that should make things easier. I hope to get a few pictures soon.

You don't know how to sex mice? If not, I'll find the pictures I saw a few days ago, they are pretty good in showing you how to sex the mice.
