New Corn Snake Owner-Help Please!! Will Own Snake Soon!!

The uth should only cover about 1/3 of the viv floor. That will be your warm side. The rest is your cool side.

You're not. It's good that you're taking the time to ask these things. :)

+1. Better to ask and get things figured out now, before you have a snake. Would be 100 times more stressful figuring this out as you go with snake on hand.

As for the humidity, the water bowl will provide humidity. I live in the desert and have only had one bad shed, that was the first shed from my first corn, I followed the directions on the stickies at the top of the topics and finished the shed perfectly. AND I was using a lamp at the time. Right after the shed I bought a UTH and have had no problems with the sheds at all.

Definitely get some book like the ones I recommended, we LOVE answering questions here, but these books are easy reads and will answer questions you haven't even considered yet!

Turns out im getting a 3 1/2 foot corn snake instead of a baby for now. What is the difference (besides the size of it) between a baby and an adult? its a female so...

The MEALS!!! Definitely get a digital scale, one that reads in grams. I like this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FJFJDGS/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and use it to weigh your snake. Best way is to get a big enough container for the snake, put it on the scale (without the snake) and turn it on. It will read 0g, that is called the "tare" rate because you don't want to add that to what you put in it to weigh. Put the snake in and it is a quick read, write down her weight.

I encourage everyone to keep a diary on their snakes, I always weigh mine right before their dinner, I play with them for a bit while inspecting them from every side. I note in the notebook (I am a writer, I use the olde-timey Composition books but there are computer programs that you can use too) and record the date, weight, what it ate (or didn't), when in blue, when they shed, and anything else unusual.

Here is a good link for what to feed a snake of your size, I have one girl about your size who is 400g, and a boy who is about 6" longer who is 850g. They really do grow at different rates so this is a good guide. http://www.medusa-corns.webs.com/feedingchart.htm

You will also want a bigger tank, 20L is the minimum I would get, but anything longer with a bigger footprint is ideal.

Tell us more about this girl!

Another bonus in an adult snake is that they are usually tamer, and easier to handle. They can just wrap themselves around your arms and neck and know how to keep hold when you are handling them. Babies seem to just want to shoot out of your hands and across the room!

You still want to put her in the viv and wait a week before handling her, let her get used to her new home. It is almost harder than resisting the last cookie, but you have to be strong!!!

Well I haven't actually seen her yet and she has a huge tank already that she is in. she's been moved from my cousin's house to my uncle's house and back to his daughter's house and now to my dad's house. Ive heard that she is a deep/dark red with some white and black in her so im guessing she's either a motley fire corn or just a fire corn. I will be able to see her later on today. I also have three cats two of them are younger so they are a bit wild and my third cat is about 9 years old how will the snake and cats get along if she gets out?

how will the snake and cats get along if she gets out?

They won't. The cats will think it is a plaything, the snake will hide as quickly as she can.

So don't even let that be an issue from day one. Make sure you have a secure, tightly closed lid that the snake can't lift and the cats can't open. Escape is not an option.

Definitely wait for a week before trying to take her out. Let her settle in.

If she has black she isn't a fire corn, but pictures will help identify her!

What ive seen of her she looks like a fire corn. she was hiding so I couldn't get a good look at her

The pic in my avatar is a Fire Corn, she was my first corn snake. Fires are amels or albinos, meaning they have no black on their bodies and their eyes are red. If your girl has black and her eyes are black she is probably a normal.

Here is a link to Fire corns and to Normals.

Let us know what you have! I have two Normals, I love their coloring more than most of the expensive morphs, their coloring just gets better with age!

I wanted to hold her but she is stressed out and is about to shed anyways.

And I told you about how hard it is to not handle her! The "last cookie"! I rescued two 1 year old boys this past week and am still slapping my hands when I change their water so I don't try to scoop them up! Three more days...

I promise it will be worth the wait, if she is used to being handled then it will be a great and easy introduction when you do get to hold her. Just be firm and let her know you aren't afraid, make sure her body is supported and you will bond just fine.

Oooh, I am excited for you!
