Do you think I should clue the seller in on my concern for her condition, or play clueless? In other rescues, particularly horses, people get defensive and animals disappear when they feel judged.

I would just go in, smile, clench my teeth, say nothing, get her and the tank and everything then take a rock and throw it through the window and run like hell. :sidestep:
 
LOL Smigon! Right now I'm going through photos from the seller. S/he looks bright eyed; mouth and vent are clean. Tail shape suggests male to me, for whatever that's worth, which is admittedly not much. ;)

Is there a way I could see an impaction? Swelling, discoloration, that sort of thing?

He claims to feed her two mice about every two weeks. Um...really? "About" as in--not really? And he does feed her in her cage with the sand. ACK.

S/he is definitely skinny, too. :(
 
Incidentally, outside of being so sadly skinny, does s/he appear motley to you?

I don't think you can tell impaction until she is fed. I think that just getting her fed (two mice every two weeks my a$$) and hydrated is the important thing.

I wish I lived closer, I would get her myself!

I can't look at snakes on Craigslist...unless I'm serious about adopting. It just makes me really sad. :nope: :(
 
I couldn't stand it. I bought the skinny snow corn today.

At approximately 4 years old and 3 feet long, she's a horrifying 82g. :(

The good news is, she peed and pooped on the drive home and it looked normal--so that suggests there may not be an impaction, as I feared.

I'll start a separate post about her with plenty of pics.

UGH. Poor girl.

OH!!! I cried out reading that weight. Seriously, you have a VERY high place in snake heaven for getting her. I am glad she defecated for you so you can get an idea of what she ingested, now is the time to fatten her up!

Good for you, I am glad she will have a very happy forever home.

I'd feed that cornsnake up slowly...not more often than once a week or you'll end up with her getting too fat or storing fat in the liver. I think if she's fed more regularly she'll put the weight on safely and do fine....I'd start small on the meal too....
 
Aw, thank you smigon. Good news is, the container I was weighing her in threw my scale off--she's actually 189g. Still super skinny, but not "how is she still alive" SUPER skinny.

Here she is weighing in more accurately. I've used this 114g container before, and it has been pretty reliable at weighing everything from my hatchlings to other adults. So, 303 - 114 = 189g. :)

I completely disinfected her cage (it's actually a nice set up, minus the reptile sand) and she's now resting on a thick layer of aspen. :) I aim to offer her a fuzzy on Monday when I feed the rest of my serpentine zoo.

She's very sweet, or at least seems that way assuming it's not due to being weak.

She's pretty, too.

MegF, that is definitely my plan and intention. I figure the approach is along the same idea of rescue work with emaciated horses--starting slow and small to avoid overwhelming their systems. Killing them with kindness, essentially.

My plan currently is weekly feedings of a fuzzy, then slowly upgrading. She was supposedly fed two large mice last Monday, which is an awful lot for a girl in her state. I'd say based on how much she pooped it's more likely she had one adult mouse, though. Not like I'm believing Mr. "Two Mice Every Two Weeks."

I also may dust the fuzzy in vitamin powder, too, but first thing I need to do is make sure she'll eat f/t--the seller said he always gave her live.

I may also bring in a fecal sample for eval by my vet to make sure she's not parasitic. My guess is all she needs is groceries.
 
LauRuffian, put the bowl on the scale first and then turn it on. It should read zero, or if it doesn't, hit the "on" button again which also says "zero". Put the snake in the bowl and it will give a perfect readout of her weight, no need to subtract!

I am SO glad it wasn't as bad as we thought, but I know you and you will take such good care of her and make sure she gets healthy. Yay!

I think she had calcium sand as her bedding before, judging my the stains I can't freakin' scrape off the side of her tank. That makes me feel better because it is more digestible, though still quite capable of causing an impaction.

I'm taking one of my other foster snakes back to the store I got him from today--another snow, in fact. This one was a noneating hatchling who's now a complete pig not longer picky about what, where, or when he eats. :) He more than doubled his weight in his two months with me. :dance: I'll pick up a UTH for Holly (I've settled on Hollywood for her name) while I'm there.
 
I was going to suggest zeroing your scale with the bowl on it before adding the snake but Smigon beat me to it! Calcium sand is better than regular in some ways although I'd worry about excessive calcium if she has ingested it. I can bet money that she will take f/t without a problem. I'm sure she's pretty hungry and I rescued a very undersized burmese python from some people that had only been fed one live mouse every 2 weeks since they got it as a 2-year old. She weighed less than my cornsnake did. She took f/t and at first she dropped it and sniffed the wet fur, but when I offered it again on the tongs she ate it right down. I've yet to have a cornsnake refuse f/t...even the wildcaught ones.....for that matter I've never had a snake that wouldn't take f/t regardless of whether it was cbb or w/c.....
