Where are you taking the temperature reading from? Do you have a thermometer with a probe in it? You need a thermometer that has a wire that goes to a probe that you stick on the glass over your heater because it may be 95 right on the glass but 60 up in the air. Also what are you using to heat the tank?
The heat mat will have to start burning before the stick on thermometer rises above sixty. so ...if you get an digital thermometer with an probe(indoor/outdoor type) and place the probe above the heat mat your will get proper temperature reading.
If you cant get a decent digital thermometer asap, pull the dial one off the wall and place it on the floor over the heat mat. Also, what temp is your thermostat set to?
Maplins sell a digital thermometer/hygrometer for under £20. The stick-on dial ones are next to useless. An unregulated heatmat can cause serious burns to a snake, you will meed a thermostat asap
Hang on, the dial thermometer will only measure the ambiant air temp, and not very accurately at that. If the bulb plus the unregulated heatmat give a reading of 80 on a dial, you could have actual temperatures high enough to cause neurological damage or kill your snake.
dont do away with the heat mat!!!!! you need it, get a correct digital thermo on it and a digital thermometer with a probe it needs steady consistant heat thats not fluxing please get one thinkof the health of your snake
I don't want you to think anyone was jumping on you they were just worried so to sum everything up the setup you need for keeping temperautres right and can monitor them is as follows.
A heat mat under aprox 1/3 of the tank
A digital thermometer with probe placed directly on the glass over the heater.
Some form of temp regulation for the heat mat either a dimmer (rheostat) or a thermostat
Alright sounds good so now you know what you need. Also i don't think anyone answered your question about humidity you do want a humidty gauge as well ideally so you can keep track of the humidity at the substrate level.
I would just like to add, I use the (stick on) thurmomature and it works fine for me, the temps are generally the same as my thurmostat is set at, and if they are wrong its because my heating is on in my room, therfor its a few higher,
they make the stick on thurmomatures for a reason lol!
but that would be the temp at the side of the cage or the room temp, if you have a UTH the temp will be much higher at the surface, and not raise the air temp
