I need a 12 step plan...

I have to ask- Is she spikey? :)

Very cute. I find myself making more purchases when I'm single. :grin01: It's kinda nice not to have someone tell you you're too nuts about your animals. ;)

Well, her scales are dry and rough, but surprising, she doesn't feel spiky. I brought Jolie to visit my classroom (2nd grade) and they all thought that she was going to be spiky too, but the spikes are "flexibly pointy" (for lack of a better expression) and not sharp & stiff. They were surprised to feel how dry & rough she feels. Her little talons/claws can be a bit much to take, especially when I let her climb around on me -- her place of preference to perch is on the back of my neck, and if I'm not wearing something thick enough & she feels like she's falling & starts to scratch to get a better grip -- well, that can smart. I'm also allergic to just about everything, so my skin will get red & raise up from where she's "clawed" me -- so I just try to keep covered as much as I can & deal with it. :)

You can trim the tips of the claws, but I don't...I don't cut my cats' claws, and the house & I are fine, so I'm not going to trim my beardie's. :)

But, Jolie does have a super-soft & smooth ventral side...just a surprise a minute. :)

The hedgehog, on the other hand, is quite spikey. I am still working with her to get her to relax more. :) She is calmer than most and never rolls up, but still dislikes being handled. It will come with time.

:dunce: Ohmigod, I am so s:uhoh:rry -- I inadvertently hijacked your thread celebrating your gorgeous hedgehog -- Ms Annabelle -- in trying to convince you to get a beardie, and then like a total smeghead, assumed (and yes, I do know what that makes me to be -- which is how I feel right now!) that the spiky question was regarding the bearded dragons. I deserve a total :punch: right now...! My most sincere apologies to both you & Ms Annabelle.

I'm sure you're safe from being in the doghouse. I quite frequently ask if things are spiky. And hey... let's face it... it's valuable information.

Spikey animals are good! I love the spikes along Isabels cheeks- they're fun to stroke. Do hedgehogs smell good? Do they bite? Isabel smells kind of like a frog. But I like it. She won't ride on my neck, though, she slithers down my back. I have to carry her on my arm like royalty.

Someone else here has hedge hogs. Trevor-LeftyMusolini? Someone out in California.

Adenovirus in Bearded Dragons

ISo I've thought about an adult, but there's still the adenovirus thing to worry about. Have you had yours tested? I am not sure if it's worth worrying about for a single pet beardie, but I guess that's one of the things holding me back.

After this post got me thinking, I am going to get Isabel's poo tested by electron microscope up at University of Illinois. I don't know how relevent this is for a single, healthy, thriving adult, but I'll know anyway!

How it works is you e-mail Lou Ann Miller [email protected] , she sends you a kit, and you do this:

Collection:

• For this virus it is important to collect the feces as fresh as possible. Even 30 minutes post elemination is too long for good viral identification.

• Collect the sample in a ziplock bag, and immediately FREEZE, not just refrigerate.

• When ready to send a collection of samples, take the still frozen feces and place in the tube with 5 mls of fixative:

Preparation

1. Use a 15 ml conical tube, best with a screw cap,

Place up to 5 mls of feces into the tube.

2. Place 5 mls of fixative on top of the sample, then mix well
with wooden sticks. Appropriately discard the sticks.

3. Cap the tube, seal with parafilm, and put into
2 plastic bags if shipping in a box, or into provided mailer.

4. Send with samples in contact with an icepack, overnight to:

The cost is $23.45/ sample, and the check should be made out to
the “University of Illinois”

I have not smelled the hedgehog yet. She's kind of prickly... she has a habit of running down into the crook of your arm until she can't run anymore, and then backing out quickly...

I may run her to the vets for an exotic pet exam... her skin around her ears is a little flaky. I am worried it is ear mites or mange mites.
