They have a whole section to betta fish. It looks like his fins are "clamped" and some finrot. You can use something called MelaFix for the finrot. If you search that webiste, there should be something about his fins being clamped.

Bettas have an organ called a Labrynth, so they can breath air.

I've used MelaFix in my tanks that do not have a filter/airator or anything and they were A Okay
 
Most places I've come across say a 3 gallon tank is the bare minimum, and 5 gallons is ideal (I have no idea how big your tank is, I'm no judge of these things). They live 2 to 5 years, some have lived even longer. They tend to do better with heated tanks.


I also read someone was ranting about the 'they live in puddles' myth. They do, but only for short seasons. In the rainy season, they typically have much more room than just a puddle, living in the flooded areas (I have no idea if this is true, I decided I didn't want a betta in the end and stopped researching them).

Look into what 'cycling a tank' means, I know lots of people who keep tanks with balanced bacteria and ph levels and all sorts of stuff. In the end keeping up water quality and feeding a pet every day was too much for me : 3

I hope you're little guy gets better. Maybe give him something to hid in. I'm sure no creature likes to be out in the open all time, no matter how tiny their brains are.
 
Well, I knew this was gonna happen. I have owned fish since I was a kid, but I don't have any curently. However, since I moved all my snakes into sterilites, I have several empty ten gallon tanks. I just purchased these two to start filling them.

I bought them off of AQUABID.COM from a breeder in Thailand. Don't you just love on line shopping? I'll post my own pictures when they arrive. In the meantime I'm taking recommendations for names.

Thanks. I thin they're pretty special. Unfortunately, they are like corn snakes...can't have jsut one. Here's another one I just won on auction in the last 15 minutes.

Don't use melafix... it has been shown to have adverse reactions in some bettas, disabling their labyrinth, which kills them quicker than fin rot can. I agree it looks like rot... I'd try a salt treatment. 1 tsp. salt per gallon, added over 5 days... i.e. a 5 gallon tank, add 1 tsp. per day. Then keep it at that level for an additional week or so, see how he does. Salt works very well. If you can combine that with daily or every other day water changes, it will work even better.

I DO have an extra aquatium... and shipping is only $5.00...
I used to keep bettas, I never understood why they died, though. I tried breeding but the females kept on dying after a week, the male was ready and he was making the bubbles but dunno. He ended up dying after a month or two...

I am well aware of their labryinth organs.
It's still not healthy for them, especially if you're trying to fix a problem. It does lead to a bigger chance of creating another problem.
Also if anyone else is interested, a great site for bettas is ultimatebettas.com it's where I lived before here.

OMG those are the most beautiful betas I've ever seen in my life... they definitely don't get like that here lol... even when I bred them, mine didn't come to half as beautiful as those!!!

kind of sounds like you're feeding your betta too much. i feed mine maybe 2 bloodworms, every 2-3 days. if he's swimming funny it could be a swimbladder issue. google it.

Sorry to steal this thread but Sunday night, I came hme from dinner and Rockys fins were TORN up. I have no idea why!!! Holes, splits, and I just cleaned his tank! WTF??. He didn't look that way in the morning!

But this morning, I can't spot any holes in his tail...weeeird. I'm doing daily water changes now so if it was fin rot his water is nice and clean.
 
Bettas are also known to be tail biters as well, it's a seemingly neurotic condition that some of them have.
Sometimes it's boredom and a direct result of a lack of stimulius, something stressful, or they're just having a mental difficulty.

Yes, I totally agree with you... they definitely go crazy when they get bored lol... and also if you have the mirror to his tank for a long period of time, you can drive him crazy. I had a mirror up against one of mine 24/7 and it literrally went out of his mind. It tore himself TO SHREADS!!! Wow, needless to say I definitely took the mirror away but it was too late, his fins always looked like that forever after that. :(

I'm sorry to say but Humpfrey has passed away :[[

I was keeping him warm and everything, but I'm guessing the reptisafe was not a good idea :[

but now I'm putting a lot of care into my sisters fish who is not named. His water is being kept at 75*-85* and seems to be happy. Also he is eating bloodworms without any problem.

My parents keep saying I'm basically cooking him but everything is saying to keep them in the high 70s lowtomid 80s.
They think I'm blowing it out of proportion keeping the little tank under a heat lamp but I dont care haha.

He has two coloum pillar things and a big plant he likes to play in as well as marbles on the bottom of his tank.

I think hes getting more used to people (if that makes sense for a fish) yesterday he was only hiding beihind his plant but now hes comming out on my side of the tank.

and he is making a lot of bubbles! He has a huge collection of all these tiny little bubbles in the corner of the tank

Bubbles are good though, it means they're in the mood for love, and the way I see it it means that they feel that their bodies are healthy enough to sustain breeding.

that's so kewl. I don't know if ya'll have ever bred these little guys or not but they are the most interesting fish to breed. I used to breed them a few years ago and I had so much fun watching it happen. Man I miss breeding them. They are so neat. The male blows a bubble nest on top of the water, then when you put a female in (VERY IMPORTANT!!!! She has to be fat with eggs, if she is not ready, HE WILL KILL HER!!!! - at least 1 year old), he gently wraps his body around hers and squeezes the eggs out a little at a time, 5 or so, then he goes down and picks all the eggs up and blows them in the bubbles on top, then goes to her and squeezes out another 5 or so and does this over and over again til all the eggs are out of her. After he's done, take the female out as soon as you see signs of the male getting aggressive. He takes very good care of them way after they hatch. He is the best dad in the world lol...

Ya'll should try it, it's so fun lol...
