what does everyone keep their rats in?

If it's 1" bar spacing like most ferret cages, it will work for adult males and large females but any pups or small females will be able to escape.

I use a big SuperPet ferret cage for my adult males.

To be safe for small rats you need 1/2" bar spacing.

I have been following this thread with interest and finally have time to chime in. I started keeping my harems 1.3 in the 30g plastic tubs with a top I fashioned out of wire cloth. I learned quickly that 1.2 in this case works better because the females tend to argue with each other far to much. Since having gone to 1.2 most of the time things are peaceful. Yesterday I had a battle between a mother due to deliver and her sister who has 10 18 day old pups with her. The big mama wanted everything, so I moved her into a tank by herself and moved the occupants in there into the tub with the mom and pups. Short a cage right now yet again. I like the look of the rack and when my other half gets home will discuss it as a weekend project. Right now with 16 female rats, and 12 hamsters its fun but I also am not producing enough to feed what snakes are not brumating. When they come out in two weeks I will need to buy some to get me over the hump. I am also running out of room seemingly everywhere not to mention the other half's tolerance is running rather low.
It's been fun and I love playing with the color and coat genetics with the rats.
Still cannot explain some results but it's all good.
Peace.
Scott

Rodents...It's what's for dinner!

Thanks. I think mine is a superpet ferret cage actually. I had gotten it some time ago at a pet store, and they mostly sell super pet. The 1/2 inch bar spacing is an important tidbit of info thank you.

haha yeah I'm sure I'll get into the coat colors thing too. I wanted to get quality adults because the parents themselves would most likely be pets, but I wanted to also save space. It seems most people are using the sterilite tubs with hand made tops, a rack or wire cages. I think after reading all of this I might start with a 1:2 colony when I do get pair and see how it goes from there. I don't have a whole lot of snakes either, so I am sure everything will be ok. I'm only waiting for one of my snakes to get on or about the same page as the rest so I can just get rid of mouse breeding. Thanks everyone for replying and helping me to plan ahead :) It's very helpful.

All of my adults (including one female who is the very spawn of satan himself) are pets. I grew quuickly tired of the the basic white and black and white hoodies. I have acquired adults from all over in such a myriad of colors. Now I am simply keeping babies to use as breeders because I have 4 distinct male lines and know which females should work best and where. I have found that the female who is so mean does not throw that to her offspring as I have 3 sons of hers and 1 daughter none of whom have ever drawn blood. She would draw blood everychance she got if I allowed it. She has huge litters of ultra nice babies which is why I keep her. Often times if she is not pregnant or nursing (rarely any more) she will mellow out enough for me to pick her up. I alway dread cleaning her cage because its always a fight. That is the breaks and 1 bad apple out of the batch is tolerable.
Peace
Scott
