New Mandarin Rats

Gorgeous! They are my wish list for when I win the lottery and can devote more time to my hobbies! ;)

Those are neat looking snakes! Can't say that I've ever seen any quite like that before (of course I am new to the whole snake owning thing).

DM you know I want a hatchling, so please set aside one for me! :D They are just beautiful!!
Will you guys be headed out this way for the show again in Sept?

Well, I knew this was going to happen sooner or later and I figured it was better to get it out of the way than to prolong it. The female nailed me. The original owners told me she was nippy and I never play down what anybody tells me. So I decided it was time for her and I to get to know each other. I opened her tub, she seemed fine and calm, then I put in my hand in the far side of the tub from her, closed fisted, knuckles down with the back of my hand facing her. I've learned to do this in the past so in case of a strike, there's not much for the snake to grab hold of which reduces the risk of a bite with constriction which never seems to go very well. Anywho, she started the tail rattling, so I knew she was letting me know I was in her space. When I didn't move, she struck my hand close mouthed as a warning shot. When I didn't withdraw my hand after 10 seconds, she hit me again with her mouth wide open getting some teeth in me. Fortunately she wasn't able to get a grasp of anything and I quickly picked her up which got me musked but after that, she totally calmed down and was very handleable. She's definitely workable and I think as we get to know each other, she'll calm down. My wife took some pics of the battle scars and my naughty little girls :)

Not a bad bite at all, just a little blood.

The first rule of Bite Club is - you do not talk about Bite Club.
The second rule of Bite Club is - you DO NOT talk about Bite Club.
Third rule of Bite Club, someone yells OUCH!, bleeds, passes out, the bite is over.
Fourth rule, only one person to a bite.
Fifth rule, one snake at a time, fellas.
Sixth rule, no gloves, no sleeves.
Seventh rule, bites will go on as long as they have to.
And the eighth and final rule, if this is your first night at Bite Club, you have to get bitten! :crazy02:

Hopefully we'll get some fertile eggs out of this pair. I would be more than happy to sell you one if it wouldn't put me on your hubbies "list" ;)

We will definitely be making it down for the 2008 Anaheim NARBC show as well as the Reptile Super Show in San Diego in June. We wouldn't miss either for the world, especially NARBC! Are you going to make it this time? You really missed out last year, it was great :)

They are really really lovely DM!!!! Hey! I see you are online! :) I'm in chat! lol

Glad you ponied-up and took the hit! Even gladder there were bite-club photos  (You did remember the internal alcohol, stat, for the wound?)

DM you are so crazy man that's why I love ya! I would love a fiesty one from ya. Male of course..hehe.
June sounds fun also. We love San diego lots to do w/ the kiddos. Gary is comin' around...slowly..lol
I will try my best not to miss it this yr. Hopin' to bring him w/ me.
Sorry for the bite. I think she knows whose boss now..

Don't think that getting a male will be any easier. It's all a roll of the dice. The '07 pair I picked up last year at the NARBC show are quite the opposite in attitude. The male from that pair has bitten me several times whereas the female is really shy. At least he is still tiny!

The SD show we went to last year did not seem to be anywhere near the ocean nor Balboa although you are in the drivable vicinity of any of those places. If you do plan on going to the SD show, seriously, get there early. The last show had such a turnout, the fire dept. showed up and limited how many people could reside in the building at one time leaving almost 100 outside waiting to get in. Supposedly the venue they are using this year will accomodate more people, but still...

Well, there's definitely several shows to catch in So. Cal other than just the SD and NARBC shows. So you at least have several chances to catch at least one! I think we'll only be flying down for those two shows though.
Sorry for the bite. I think she knows whose boss now..
Don't be sorry, it's all a part of integrating with the animals :) If they were all mellow, what fun would they be? ;) The weird thing is, I'd almost rather be bit than musked or pissed on which is what a few of these knuckleheads now choose to do since they know coiling and striking isn't getting them any satisfaction. At least I've learned to keep my mouth tightly closed with those ones :smash:

As far as the female Mandarin knowing who's boss, I think the verdict is still out on that one until I go to handle her again later this week. I have the feeling she's not done with me yet ;)
