Just got my First Corn!

Hi all! I just got my first corn! He is young, not sure how young but I would say about 14-16 inches long. He is a striped corn too so he looks cool. Anyway, I put paper towel down as substrate, and he just went under it.... anything better I should use besides aspen? something that he can't use to hide under?

P.S. don't worry I have got plenty of hides for him, he doesn't need the entire tank.

it might just be the snakes personality, being awkward lol, i use the same method... plenty of places to hide, but similar to paper towels... kitchen role, and she hardly ever goes underneath.
*not very informative i know, but thought id throw it in there :p*

Well you just got the snake, basic instinct is to get to the darkest place, underneath the papertowels. Unless your hides are snug enough to fit the corn squishy on both sides he's very likely not to use them untill he's settled in for awhile.

That's the whole point of having substrate- to give the snake something to hide under!
I'm with Nanci on this, the more secure you can make your snake, with substrate to hide under, hides and fake plants, the sooner they seem to get confident enough to explore.

Ah, ok then. Well, then I'll leave him there!

One more thing, my herpstat didn't come in yet so as of right now I have nothing to regulate the temp of the heating pad.... What should I do?

As a temporary measure you could raise the viv up off of the heatmat a couple of centimeters until the temp on the glass inside the viv is acceptable.

You just get back from Hamburg PA.
Tell us about it. How many venders and such. Was it worth the trip.
I need input.

Oh man it was amazing! There was probably 2000 people there and sooooooo many reptiles! I spent about 4 hours there and didn't want to leave. However, I found the perfect snake and I love him.

Really though, should I just not use the heat pad for a few days until the herpstat comes in?

No you should use the heat pad unless your house is 80-85* inside which I doubt. Either add 3-4 inches of Aspen or raise the tank as Janine said.

Did you get the snake from the guy with the striped trio? I would have gotten a normal stripe but I think I made a good choice with my hoggy.
I think it's ok if you use the heat pad, as long as it's not too hot in your house and you can put alot of paper towels on top of where the heat pad is just in case.

Did you go too!!
And I think you from Jersey.
How long was the trip. Sounds like it was worth it with that many people.
Were there lot of corns for sale and what morph.
So for the question but every show around here is (for me ) is about a two to four trip so it has to be worth it for me to go.

It was 1 1/2 hours from Mercer County, there wasn't alot of corns, and most were normals. I would say it wasn't THAT worth it, but it was cool. The one in Dec. was better.

Well, this was my first reptile show, so to me it was amazing. They had hundreds of corns, I don't know what the other guy was talking about but anyway, there were a lot of different snakes too. Boas, pythons I mean ANYTHING! They even had Alligators! I don't know who would by an alligator but whatever. lol. Anyway I had a lot of fun. They had all kinds of corns from snow to regular to charcoal. It was great!

I've not been to a show yet, even though I live in warm and sunny FL lol. I hope to attend a few nearby this year.

It definitely was a lot of fun!! The next one is on March 29th and I have every intention on going again :0)

As long as you didnt get s upre hot pad you should be okay.

Ok so this last one is his tank, which I am going to take the paper towels out of and put in a couple of inches of aspen.

I just got my herpstat, and I was wondering what I should set the max temp to. Any input?
