I am not arguing wild vs captive. The whole idea is that one needs to create a microclimate the little ones can confidently navigate.

Also, if there is no thermostat/rheostat on the heating pad and the keeper is only using paper towels that can be of concern as well. Especially if he is under the towels. Snakes can get burned before they are aware.
He also may be avoiding the warm hide because it is too warm...some corns will shy away from direct heat at 85*F or over...90*F can kill them.

As long as the warm hide is internally between 80*F-84*F and the little corn is using it, he will be fine.
If you keep such a large enclosure you may want a couple extra small water bowls around the perimeter so he can easily access them and to maintain the ambient humiditiy.
