Found a red rat yesterday

Buzzard

two corny
Normally I find my snakes that I post at the park where I work. However on my way to the truck from my apartment I saw the neighborhood cat jump at something and quickly retreat... So I couldnt help it, I had to check it out. And there balled up was a little red rat snake

So now I have a problem...She is absolutely gorgeous. And I would love to keep her. She has yet to strike at me. and she allowed me to pick her right up... So to keep the cat from having a snack, I took her in, put her in a tank and was wondering what everone else thought of keeping wild?????

My first cornsnake is WC, and I haven't gone to hell yet. But now when my neighbors tell me they find them all the time, I just say I don't want to know- because I am weak...

That's a beauty. Good thing you rescued her from the cat!

Typically RED rats are Corn snakes and that is a mighty nice looking snake you have there. I really like the banding. And since you live in Florida, corn snakes are not in a shortage so I think you might be fine in keeping snakes. I would say wc are fine as long as the local populations are healthy. I would isolate this guy from your personal collection for at least 6 months. But for me, this would be a keeper. Heck, if I saw a captive bred snake like this, i would buy it.

LOL Nanci.

I guess really you should ask yourself if you want a beautiful normal corn, or if you have limited space and want to save that slot for some other thing.

If it eats and does well, then it'll likely make a good pet. There is nothing wrong with taking a cornsnake from the wild in FL for a personal pet as long as you take the best care of it that you can - and NEVER release once you begin to maintain it in captivity. Let it go now or not at all! If it doesn't eat after it warms up and your try a couple of times, let it go roughly where it was captured as long as it was quarantined from the rest of your collection. I believe it is legal to release it like that in Florida. Thankfully, though, many states do prevent the release of animals once they have been in captivity.

Anyway, good find, pretty snake, and congrats on the new pet. There's probably a 95% chance it'll eat for you once armed up in its new cage!

That is so cool! We're in an urban area here, and would have to drive to one of our state parks to MAYBE catch a glimpse of a garter snake. My mom finds it amusing when I get excited about all the lizards in her yard (she lives in a small town outside of Phoenix) We just don't get to see stuff like that here in the frozen wasteland. I envy you folks in the south!

If she is that calm, and friendly, then I would say sure, go for it! But since I am still learning about snakes myself, I can't tell you what to do, and yes she is very beautiful!!

It kind of bothers me when you see WCs for sale at snake shops or at shows. Like, aren't there enough normals produced as by-products anyway? Plus those snakes are guaranteed to have a big parasite load. Is the kid that buys a cheap snake going to get it dewormed? Does he even know? Well, I guess that didn't help my arguement- at least in captivity, the snake gets treated. Maybe. I think it would be wrong for me to scour Florida for every cornsnake I could find and then keep it, but I don't think it's wrong to collect a single exceptional specimen. Especially one that is in a dangerous situation.

Maizey has always been the tamest snake I ever met. AND he comes when he's called! When I want to feed him, I open his cage, knock on a hide in the front and say "Maize, time for dinner!" and close the door again. Within five minutes he's waiting at the door. Actually, several of my corns have learned to do this. It's much easier than digging all over for him.

Thanks everyone I will attempt to feed her/him in the morning and see if she/he eats. Yes it is in a totally different tank and is being keeped far away from the others for a while. My two kids want to name it bandit(because it has really dark circles compared to all the other snakes I have)....So if it eats..I beleive I have yet another mouth to feed :)
