Corn snake breeding

Carinata

Ever Evolving Exotics
Before you read this I do want to say this is just an idea and if ya have anything negative to add PM me.
If any one here watches snake bytes you saw the episode where they sex snakes. I used the taper method on my corns and found I have a pair I want to breed them. The male is amel the female anery what babys would I get and how should I go about this.

First, you need to get the books by Kathy Love "Corn Snakes : The Comprehensive Owner's Guide" and Don Soderberg "Corn Snakes In Captivity". Read both of those completely.

Next, you need to make sure your snakes are mature enough to breed. If not it can be very dangerous to your snakes.

You also need to make sure you have all equipment necessary before breeding. Such as an incubator, housing for the hatchlings and access to plenty of pink mice to feed the hatchlings.

There is much more, but I am just hitting on the basics. When you read the books, you will have much more information to go by.

You also need to make sure that you can find homes for the hatchlings. They can be quite expensive to keep for any length of time - lots of hungry mouths to feed every 4-5 days! If you keep them too long, you might not get the cost of the food, housing, heating etc. back, especially as they're likely to be Normals, which don't sell for a lot of money.

I aim to have mine sold after their third feed (although my local reptile shop will take them after two).

Which books have you read? Most will have sections on breeding, including how to set up an incubator. The Kathy Love book does - I'd recommend that one.

A bird egg incubator will do for a start, as long as you can disable the mechanism for turning the eggs. Or you could make your own.

Taper method? Are you talking about visually sexing by tail shape/length? If so, that is in no way accurate and I would highly recommend that you take the snakes to someone experienced for probing.

I have read the books I will breed in the summer
Good luck then! Everything is in those two books. My first year breeding I followed Kathy's book by 99% of the letters. I was very successful. You can make necessary changes to your methods after you've gained some practical experience.

Since you're disagreeing with a number of the suggestions (that you asked for by the way) that have been given to you, I think you're ready to go. You have it down. :D

Again, good luck!
