Red Tail Boa question

tstephe3

Wanna pet my Snake?
Hi all,
So i'm sure some of you have heard me talk about the Kent State Biology Club.

We now have a corn snake, ball python, 2 red eared sliders, a golden gecko, numerous fish, 2 blue tongued skinks, and now a red tail boa!

Any way, I had a question, it seems as if the past owners of the red tail boa has tried to keep the size of the snake down by not feeding it so much. I think it is 3-4 years old but seems to be pretty small for a 3-4 year old. Being under fed, would this stunt her over all growth? Or will it just slow her/him down from getting to be full grown?

Right now, she/he is about 4 feet and eating medium rats. So, I thought that was small.. I could be wrong though. I thought I'd ask though since it seems like a lot of people have some Red Tails.

Thanks alot!!!

It will actually slow the growth down. Best thing to do is just bump the snake up to a little larger rat about once a week for a few months. Does it seem skinny at all? can you feel the ribs on the animal?

ok, so it wont hurt the overall length and size? um as for the ribs, i didnt get to handle, they just fed him/her a medium rat earlier in the day, so i just got to look. you could see the muscle line down the back of the snake, im not sure if thats normal on a boa though.

oh and as far as we know its been fed live rats. is there a good way to try and convert the snake over to frozen? or should we just stick with live?

rats can cause quite a bit of harm... feeding F/t is always better

yes i agree, and that is why i was hoping to switch over to frozen. the previous owner was feeding live. i was just hoping the transfering over process wasnt to bad.

Just dangle a hot rat in front of them. lol I never had a boa refuse frozen.

haha, cool. hopefully next feeding will be a success.
