Viv too big?

So I just ordered a new "Vision Cage" for my little amel. The cage is 36x28x18 which works out to something like 78 gals. He is now 75g and about 2.5 feet long. My question is...am I going to lose him in this monster? I figured with plenty of hides he would be alright. Hes in a 20L viv now so its not like I have to move him asap. A relative offered to get me the Vision Cage so I went all out. Any input is welcome!

Wow, nice relative

You are going to hear different replies from different people.
Some folks feel a snake can be overwhelmed and feel less secure in a large enclosure even if it has a bunch of hides.
Other people think in nature they are out in the big bad world so there is no difference.
Not much of an answer is it...

Personally I would keep the corn in the 20 gallon and get a Dumerils Boa for the vision

Very nice new tank!! I would say keep the corn in the 20G and get another snake for the new tank :0) Something that could use all that space..like a GTP (Green Tree Python) or a RTB (Red Tail Boa)...or maybe a Rainbow boa :0)

dude if i was a snake id want you as an owner spoil the h$## outa that snake.... viv can never really get too big i guess just harder to find your snake

HAHA...you guys are funny! I was actually trying to clear out the 20L for a possible new corny addition. I guess I could also keep a boat load of hatchling tubs in the vision cage for a while. I actually didn't realize it was that HUGE until I figured it out with an aquarium calculator. Now I'm a little nervous...

I have one viv that's four feet wide, three feet high and eighteen inches deep with climbing shelves, and a similar one three feet wide. My Corns thrive in these (although when trialled, some didn't bother climbing to the upper levels).

Plenty of hides, plenty of ground cover like plastic foliage - your new Vision should be absolutely fine for a Corn.

If it goes off its food for any length of time when moved in, that's a sign that it's not comfortable and probably needs to return to a smaller tank.

But yes, you will still probably have the occasional "where has it gone?!" panic!

So I chickened out...I switched my order to the 24x22x14 Vision cage. 35ish gallons is enough for me!

2.5 feet long should be big enough that this is not an issue... but smaller snakes can sometimes slip out of those sliding doors where they meet in the middle. Also, make sure you lock the sliding doors, because the snake rubbing against them can open them a crack and let the snake out (so I have heard). Good luck with your new tank.

Thanks for the info! I ordered the Vision lock so that should be taken care of. And I'm going to duct tape the glass together in the middle...JUST KIDDING! I was thinking about using a strip of insulating foam rubber (for a camper shell or window a/c unit) in the middle where the pains meet. Any other ideas?

Yeah, Brazilian Rainbow Boas are so great. I have a female, and she is perfect in every way. She was one of my first snakes, and is by far my most unusual one, her pattern is amazing and she is a nice orange color. At first I was so nervous because I was scared that she was tricky being from a rainforest and all, but except for alot of humidity as babies, they are much easier than I first thought. She is one of my friendliest snakes (never strikes, even when I pick her up after feeding), and is the type of snake you can have wrapped to your arm while you watch TV, I would definitely recommend getting one if you can.
Also about the vision cage, that's a really cool gift and I would go BIG. I find that the tank size does'nt matter as long as you fill it with branches, plants, and hides. Plus it sounds like the type of tank that would make a great display, so it would look great with lots of tank decor. But I've noticed that Jungle Carpet Pythons make the best display snakes, mine are always perched out in the open and look amazing.

i will get one.. lol believe me, i just have to wait for space and money. i found a great one at the last show.. the pearlescence was awesome. but a little pricey for me. oh well
