snake supplies question

wertan10

corns are awesome
ive seen websites saying what you need but I want to hear opinions from people who have 1 or more snakes. so.... what do I need for a baby corn snake and about how much will it cost?:shrugs:
I already have a 10 gallon tank and plan to get a 20 gallon when the snake gets to big.:bomb:

Make sure that you have a screen top that is either attached, or that you have clips/locks for. Then you're going to need 2 hides, a water bowl, substrate, a heating element, thermometer, and some decorations (if you want). I'm sure there's something I'm leaving out. Anyone else wanna fill in?

a 10 gallon will definitely work for awhile for a baby corn. even in a small tank though, make sure you have many hides for your baby to feel secure!

I've heard that they can go for a year maybe a year and a half, is it true you can use a 10 gal for that long?:shrugs:

I'm not completely sure. I know it takes them roughly 3 years to reach adult size, and as an adult they should be kept in at least a 30gal, or a tub with a good floor length.

So I'd assume that they'd be good in a 10gal for about a year or so, as you said, and then maybe switch to a 20gal. Or you can go straight to 30-40gal once they outgrow the 10gal and you won't ever have to get a new one.

Remember that the length of the enclosure is what is most important. While corn snakes are adept climbers, they're typically terrestrial (prefer to stay on land) and so the length if the primary concern. So if it outgrows the 10gal and you can't afford a bigger enclosure right away, you can get a secure tub/tote and keep him in that, so long as they have breathing holes and other necessities.

thanks I'm still wondering how much it would cost for a 30-gallon tank because im sure I can't afford a 40 gal anytime soon:eatsmiley

I see 30gal typically costing about $75. I'd try garage sales or craigslist in your area. I've seen quite a few selling really cheap because they sprung a leak and can no longer hold water. Most people shy away from it due to that, but for a snake, it doesn't need to hold water and therefore is a good deal to take advantage of.

That's where I'm not sure. I think generally the snake just needs to almost be able to stretch out. So the tank should be almost as long as the snake. But this is really more of a idea of mine.

People usually recommend a 30gal minimum for an adult, and it takes about 3 years to reach adult size, so I guess so. Once again, I'm not completely sure :)
