Question about tank

ZoologyGirl

Under Tank Heather
Hello, I haven't got a corn snake yet, but I have a question about a tank for a baby.

I have a 10 gallon aquarium that I am going to put out of commission, all it has left is a betta and 2 rasboras, they will be moving to smaller tanks. Would I be able to clean this tank and use it for when I do get my snake?

If so, what should I use to clean it?

Also, around what age do corn snakes generally outgrow a 10 gallon?

Thanks.

Hi I'm new to corns, but the book I've got says yes you can put your corn in a used tank as long as it is sound. It also says you can just use hot water if your water is over180 degrees F, ten minutes should kill most bacteria. You can also use laundry or dish detergents, bleach or ammonia. I don't know from experience, but the book says a ten gallon should last you about 1 to 2 years.

The generally accepted tank size for an adult is a "20 Long", so yeah, you'd eventually have to relocate the snake.

With regular feedings, a 10 gallon tank would probably last you a year, tops.

If you're going to use any household product to clean, a very dilute bleach (1:10) solution would do the trick, but be sure to rinse thoroughly. I swear by Nolvasan (chlorhexidine diacetate), which, although initially pricey, lasts forever - you dilute 1 tablespoon of the stuff to a gallon of water. You can find it at any "Fleet Farm"-type store, or any store that carries livestock supplies.

Also make sure the tank has a secure lid with clips and enough weight so the snake can't get it open or it will slither out..they are escape experts..

Thanks, I eventually want to get a 20 long or maybe a 40 gallon breeder so if a 10 gal can last 6 to 12 months that would be perfect.

I wonder, I heard that petco does an annual "dollar a gallon" tank sale. Does anyone know if this is true and when it is? I've never seen any info on it but if I could get a 20 gal for 20 bucks that would be sweet.

My parents called a petstore who suggested a 40gallon tank, so of course thats what they think I need. It's $80, is that a good price on a 40gal? (we're getting it from a place that supposedly sell everything cheaper)

That is about the going price. I've seen them cost more a Petco and Petsmart.:)

If you can find the 1$ a gallon sale i would suggest a 29 gallon tank. Its what i have my snake in and i know he loves the extra height to climb.

check craigslist too... theres always aquariums on there and the 1:10 bleach or ammonia to cold water will kill everything harmful.

hi. i used a 40 gallon for my corn since she was 2 months old and she is now almsot 2 yrs old. didn't wanna start of and work way up. lol but if u got a tank then go fer it. just clean gd.
