I was out walking my dog today, and as I was checking out some of the trees just off the road, I realized that I almost stepped on this little guy. In the past, legless lizards have always been a little skittish, but this one seemed more mellow. He posed for some pics, then I used a stick to move him gently off of the road to avoid cars. Just thought I would share.

I've kept those before. They are kind of cool, but very secretive. And non-handleable, due to potential breakage...

I haven't seen one of those in years. Thanks for the pics, big time. I remember them to be very secretive, and very fast about getting that way. And quick to hit the ejection button. So to speak.
The only whole one I've held in my hands was a road kill somewhere 1980-1982.

The two I had were named Russell and Russell Junior. Because A: they were dug up in the winter at a construction site for Russell Construction, and B: "What do you call a guy with no arms and no legs that likes to roll in the leaves?"
 
Beautiful specimen. I find it very difficult to run into completely intact legless lizards. The only ones I've ever seen have been stumpies or road-pizza-toppings. ;)
 
they are called slow worms in the UK.when i was a kid, i went looking for them but never found any. a friend of mine had some ,he found them in cornwall.it is now illegal to take them from the wild.

This is Shade. Its hard to see, but he has a full tail. Sorry about not having a better pic, but when you put him down he takes off. Pick him up and hes fine though. I did see someone say that you shouldnt handle them due to potential breakage. Ive never heard of this or had a problem with it. Could you clarify please? I dont want to take a chance hurting him.
 
Like any skink, the post cloaca/tail region is subject to breaking off with a minimum of rough handling, or startling of the creature.
Your legless lizard looks like you know how to take care of it, so I wouldn't worry much. Don't get the tail caught in anything, though. Or in a bind (too small of quarters).
 
oOo. Thanks, I think he'll be fine then. Hes not a thrasher at all and as he's been growing Ive been keeping him in talks at least twice as long as he is (I have him in a really cool disply tank, Ill try and take pics).

That you have kept this creature. In good health. And tail intact....is about the coolest thing, to me, I've seen in a while. I never would've guessed one would adjust so well to captivity. :D

If I may ask, where/how did you get it?
 
Thanks for the compliment. I actually found him sitting in the middle of a Target parking lot. I walked right up to him and picked him up, thought he was dead at first but then he moved a little. He had a scratch on him so I was wondering if he had been dropped by a bird and was stunned. Ever since he's been a really mellow guy though more active. Hes growing slowly, only put on about 5 grams. He's shed twice and the scar is pretty much gone. I have to admit, while Ive kept other kinds of legless, I still dont know some things about this guy (for example; adult size). Id love to hear care tips. Anyone else kept one successfully?
