What are the behavioral/care differences between…

Hi,

I was wondering what the major behavioral and care differences between corns, milks and kings?

Thanks!:D

A quick google search will come up with all of those answers. However behaviorally...corns are the most mellow in my opinion.

Some are great...some not so much. Lauren and I both have a cali king. Mine is a puppy dog...hers can be tempermental. *shrugs* depends on the animal.

I've got some experience with kings and I'll say they can be quite nippy as youngsters but eventually will calm down with size. I've got 6 Desert Kings right now and I love em', but they're the most apt to bite out of my colubrids. Kings also seem to have a higher propensity for musking you which can be good fun as well.

Thanks Tara for sharing your experience. I'm definitely not ready for a temperamental snake right now. That's why I'm still leaning toward a corn.

Oh...musking can be a drag. :awcrap: Wow! 6 DKs...they must be beautiful.
Thanks Jason!

No problem. Kings are one of my favorite breeds, esp. the desert kings. Every seems to go nuts over cali's and I can't say I totally blame them, but I've become a big fan of the splendidas over event the cali's. I'd like to add a Tarahumara to the collection sometime though, I dig those as well. I'll have to put some pics of the kings up here some day soon. I've got some pretty cool ones, 2 albinos, 1 normal het albino, a hypo, a normal het axanthic and a wild type normal. Not sure if he's het for anything but I'll find out!

The corns are great! Very docile and easily handled. The other ones I like for their temperament is the Nelson's Milk snake. I have one and she is a puppy. Loves to come out and is a pain to put back. I think she is more mellow than any of my corns!

It really depends on the type of King you are looking into. Some are more relaxed than others, and some have a "bite first, ask questions later" type of attitude. California kings tend to be a bit nastier by reputation, but some are absolute sweethearts. I have 2 Cal Kings, and they have their moods, but are mostly very tame. My Desert kings are absolute dolls... I can't recall a time that they've ever turned an aggressive eye at me. My MBKs can be utter hellions at times, but I've worked with them relentlessly to tame them down with pretty good success. For the most part, kings and milks tend to have similar temperaments, though I've found in my experience that milks are the big muskers, kings are the big nippers.

Generally speaking, corns are probably your best bet for a docile pet. They too are individuals though, and some can be just as nasty (if not worse) than any king or milk. The key to all temperamental animals is time and hard work. They are ruled by instincts, and act quickly on them. If you can teach them that their defensive instinct is not necessary when it comes to you, then they all make wonderful pets. I wouldn't trade my nasty kings or milks for anything.

Thanks everyone for your help. This is the stuff I was looking for. I wanted to hear from you guys who have them all.:D
