WARNING-California AB1122 Hearing on Wednesday 5/6/09

Time to get back to work and flex a little Grass Roots Muscle. The Humane Society of the United States has a bill, AB1122, up for hearing before the CA General Assembly Appropriations Committee this Wednesday. This bill seeks to BAN the sale of animals that are NOT "traditionally" sold through pet shops. This would include many different animals INCLUDING Herps. This is an attempt to end ALL Reptile Shows and "face to face" sales that are the basis for much of how the middle and high end of our market distributes animals. It would eliminate almost ALL sales except from pet shops. Reptile Shows and open air auctions/sales would come to an end in CA.

Please don't let this happen! We need to generate hundreds of phone calls and emails to the Committee Members

That is messed up, buying straight from a breeder who *knows* the husbandry requirements of the animals he breeds and personally cares for them is WAY better than buying stressed animals from some high school kid at petland, who took the job because they thought it would be fun to play with dogs as part of their job.

(I know there are good pet store employees out there, but I know more than a few to told me awful stories of what they do for "fun" with the "stock")

I seriously hate HSUS.

Yep that's so stupid. It's like saying you'd rather get your puppy at Petco.

I'll be calling everyone on the list. When you guys call, do you ask for the Rep themselves or just register your displeasure with who ever answers the phone?

You more than likely won't be able to reach the reps themselves, but do try and get them first.

Thanks! I know it looks like a stupid question, but I imagine I'll sound better on the phone if I know who I'm calling.
I've got LOTS of slow time at work tomorrow!

Hello! It seems (from my search) that the author of the bill canceled the hearing. Does this mean this bill no longer threatens to come into law?

Cancelled the hearing for a rescheduling.

Not a complete give-up on it.

It's NOT OVER.

I don't know what this guy is doing, trying to spend money we don't have regulating something like this. I'm sure his heart is in the right place but good lord, where does he think the Fish & Game Dept. is going to get the funding for this?

Did anybody read it? It seems there is an exclusion for reptile shows specifically. Not defending it, just saying. The main worry would be for those of us who say 'meet me in the parking lot, we'll trade there' as I've done in the past.

It's strange though that it's not really what it was described as by USARK. That's a little worrying.. Did anybody else notice that?

I did notice it, and I did see it as a little different than what USARK portrayed it as... BUT!!! It still puts limits on things.

That seems like a good enough reason to fight it.

It's just that I don't believe it targets us the way it's portrayed, but rather the guy with 10 baby RES in a cold fish bowl at the swap meet. I hate that guy so I have mixed feelings. And nowhere in this, is there a preference toward pet stores or a bias against hobbyists that I could see.

I do agree with you though that unintended consequences that could hurt us.

I understand, and agree with you there..

Locally, you can find plenty of Iguanas and RES on the streets...

But, I think there could be a better way to control that part of the problem, without touching the local breeders and responsible pet owners.
