Albino Yellow Ratsnake (W/C in Jacksonville, FL)

RobbiesCornField

Bring it on.
For those of you who saw the "caught in Jax woods" thread, this is that snake. From what I can tell, s/he's an albino yellow rat snake. I think s/he's about to shed. Any other opinions?

Sure is pretty! Congrats on the pick up! How was the 222 mile round-trip? LOL. Glad that he's with a snake person who can look after him now. Love the "little pupils". They're the opposite of mine yesterday (after my eye exam). LOL.

Very nice looking snake Robbie. Whether wild or escaped pet, I know s/he's living in snake luxury now.

Kudos to the catcher too, a snake like this is probably doomed in the wild..

Thanks! It wasn't too bad. A little warm, but not too bad (my A/C went out halfway back).

Thanks! He was actually surprised it didn't wind up as Indigo chow. Apparently, they have quite a few in his area. He likes to watch them chase the black racers for lunch.

Great pick up....... Congrats

Thanks!

He's very pretty. You'd be surprised at how well an albino can hide and survive. The SREL has an albino canebrake that was caught in a guy's barn and measures around 4.5 ft. It had been living there for many years, but when his children were born he was concerned they might run into it and get hurt. The lab came out and caught him and now have him there for educational displays. He's an awesome animal and would have stuck out like a sore thumb from day one, but he obviously learned to stay out of sight.

Great pick-up Robbie! And like Rich said in the first thread, you probably saved him from being owl bait. Can't wait to see s/he when I visit next month.

That's just awesome! I love hearing stories about animals beating the odds for survival.

Thanks! I know the Indigo's were disappointed. LOL

I don't think this snake was any more likely to get eaten because of its albinism than any other yellow rat in the area. Sure it's an albino, but it's still a yellow snake-doesn't really stand out more than a typical yellow rat. Any time I see a wild caught morph, it seems like everyone comments on how unlikely it was for it to survive as long as it did. In the snake world, most of the genetic oddballs I've seen that were wild caught were already adults though. Just some food for thought.

You've got a good point. However, most of the yellow rats around here are a lot duller with better camouflage.

And that ringneck is just awesome!

Good points. We could think about our corns in their hides. What color are they now, lol. You'd never really know.
I guess really it only matters in that one little shuffle from the bush to the puddle that counts for appearance. And lots of predators for snakes are really hunting by sound, smell, etc. Except for birds, even those that use vision are probably looking for movement than for off colors.

That ringneck is pretty awesome. Is that yours Kevin?

It's a pretty snake, Robbie. It's smaller than I expected. All you great photographers and your excellent macros.

A local pet shop owner I know had a blizzard corn snake escape and never could find it. A year later a restaurant worker in the same strip found it outside behind the restaurant. I saw it after she got it back and it had some nicks and scars but seemed fine. I think it was probably feeding on the critters going through the restaurant garbage. Behind the strip it is pretty much all gravel followed by backyards of houses. Probaby not a lot of predators in that vacinity.
