Hey everyone, my girlfriend and I went herping today and caught the worst tempered snake I've seen yet. But what was funny, it was a tiny 9 inch long red-bellied snake. I got a pretty good pic of him rearing up. I hope you guys like it.

We also saw an owl, which was pretty cool, and rare.

That is an extraordinary picture of the red belly. They are such amazing looking snakes, the red is so intensely bright.

Thanks! Yeah, even though they're small, they're really amazing. I've noticed a lot of snakes that are considered common like garter snakes and such are actually really pretty snakes, they just don't get the respect they deserve lol.

wonderful pictures. That redbelly really is being as fierce as he can, and the owl is just so beautiful, thanks for sharing

I love how red bellies come in such a huge variety of colors ranging from that dark reddish brown to a pale gray. That was the second species of snake that I caught when I was a kid, and it was very thrilling because I'd only caught garters my whole life previously.

has anyone seen green tree snakes lately?

I live in s. fl. I use to catch green tree snakes. They are skinny long green snakes. I think their going extinct in s. florida. This was back in the early 70`s.

Was this related to this thread at all lol? But the only green tree snake I've ever heard of only lives in Australia and that area. Do you perhaps mean rough/smooth green snakes?

Great pic of the RB! Were you laying on the ground for that one? It seems whenever I go out to get nature shots I end up dirty crawling around trying to get a great angle, lol...

Haha yeah, I ended up getting bits of gravel stuck in my arms from laying in the middle of that path where I got the picture. That was of course after he musked me, thrashed around and tried to violently escape. I wish he would've understood that I just wanted a picture.

But if all our snakes knew that we'd never have to work for a great shot! LOL.

Great pics! I love the owl pic too... I really like owls. The seem like such "serene" animals.

That's a great pic! That's a snake we have in VA that I rarely see, maybe three times in the last 20 years. They're supposed to be all over here but they hide real good and move at night. Was it under something when you found it?
Owls are another thing we have that I rarely see, thanks for that pic! How close were you able to get?

Yeah, that was actually the first time I've found a red-bellied snake, and I've been field herping for like 5 years. We were walking, and it was just laying in the middle of the path, it wasn't under anything at all.

I think we startled the owl because it was only like 10 feet away up in a tree, and I had a couple seconds to snap some pictures before it flew away. I'm glad you guys like the pictures!
