This is my new snake i got at petco

Nice snow (at least it looks like one now). Congrats!

As for naming... pick a theme and go with the first name that comes to your head. For me, if I think X-men, the first thing I think of when I see your corn is "Storm". If I think Twilight, I think "Edward". LOL. (... and I NEVER think Twilight... IMO stupid movie. LOL).

i was going off of the market price listed in the cornsnake morph guide, and what i have seen at shows. Yes, you are right, if you want that snake the price you want to pay is the correct price..

I think many people new to herps probably buy at the retail level and that's fine. We all get here however we get here. Shows are fine for those of us who live in (or near) a city that has the occasional show, but I'm betting there's a lot of rural areas that are a long distance from the nearest show. I personally think it's completely understandable for first purchases to come from pet shops. If the new snake owner becomes addicted like the rest of us they'll find their future purchases will come from breeders, shows, etc.

i actually live and hour and a half from the nearest show out in the middle of nowhere, but i still go. But like I said, The price you are willing to pay for that particular snake is the right price.

that is 5 dollars under the price in the CMG. 5 dollars is so small that it could actually be attributed for the market prices in the region.

but the raw price of the snake is 25 and he payed 40 for the raw price so it is overpriced. If he would have payed the same raw price + shipping he would have been looking at $80 total. Either way what he payed more than market price.

Now, lets get back on the subject of the thread, shall we?

I can't leave well enough alone. Lol.

You're completely disregarding the fact that shipping factors into the price. Rather than spending ~$60-70 to have a snake shipped from a breeder, he paid $40 for a Petco snake. Whether or not $40 is more than $25 baseline price, he saved money..

Someone mentioned that there are rural areas just too far from any shows. They very much exist.. For example, the majority of my county is one of those areas. I'm a 2-3 hour drive from the nearest show (once a year), and ~4-5 hours from the other 4 or 5 shows the Pacific Northwest gets each year. It costs just as much in gas (if not more) to go to a show for one or two snakes as it would to ship those same snakes.

That said... Your first snake is your first snake. I'm sure Hamsterboy isn't going to regret getting his first snake from Petco for $10 above usual market price, just like I do not regret, in any way, getting my first snake, an Anery from Serpenco, for $40 + $50 shipping. Or $30 + $60... I can't remember. =P

Okay. Rant over.

Congratulations on your new snake!! S/he's adorable. =)
In the future, though, try to get your snakes from breeders. Much less chance of health issues, and you know they're well taken care of and feeding reliably! =)

For the record, i never said he should have gone to a show. i said that even at shows they go for around $25.

His profile says he lives in california. There is a ton of breeders in Cali so he might have been in driving range.

i would say 40-60 for shipping price it really depends on the shippers location.

now if a breeder had been selling this same exact snake at the same exact price, and had it shipped, he would be looking at $80-100 to ship it. And even the fact that it is a petco snake should effect the price.

and some part of the fault is due to petco. i saw one petco that was selling a snow because there reptile "expert" thought they were "extremely rare". Petco didn't know enough to sell it at the right market price, or they were trying to take someone who was new to snakes. When i started, i knew nothing about prices. But luckily i was not lied to because i got mine from a local breeder. the longer you are in this the more you learn. early in the game, most no-one knows much.
