A comment on another thread got me pondering on my habit. My corn-keeping began with single birthday snake from my kids in 2008. I now have 16 in the house, one elsewhere awaiting pickup, and plans for breeding/buying more next year. I've always loved all sorts of animals and been thankful to experience the joys (and tears) that come with breeding them. Genetics is a favorite subject. Colors are a favorite blessing. It therefore doesn't surprise me at all that I've fallen deeply in love with this hobby.

This made me wonder about others' experiences. How many planned to have only one, and ended up with quite a few more? How many planned to go large-scale and have scaled back? How many are happy about their current numbers?

So, fellow addicts, please think back to when you got your first corn. Is where you are now in terms of numbers where you expected to be? Thanks in advance for sharing!
 
Oh well lets see. When I was a young boy oh maybe 10 I started wanting to keep snakes after seeing a ball python. Well i got a WC garter then I got my corn then I started growing and got into more stuff now I have over 20 snakes and have many more on the way. I will always have snakes!
 
I initially was interested in getting a leopard gecko and while doing research, stumbled upon this site. I scratched the leo idea and decided to get my first anery corn from SMR. I got him in October of 05. One month later I got an okeetee from SMR. I thought that would be it for me. But then, I read about all the wonderful finds at expos so I went to my first Denver reptile expo in January the following year and came back with a normal motley boy from VMS and also picked up a california king. In less than 6 months I had 4 snakes. I eventually ended up selling the anery,who would only eat live, and the kingsnake. I bought a couple others in 2006 and stuck with 5 snakes until this past year. I was doing so good! I knew I would have a couple snakes, but I never would have thought I was going to be up to 13! Which is a terrible number btw... I might need another one just to make it 14 LOL.

I am not regretting what I have, but I know I will probably end up selling a bunch in a year or two as I decide which ones fit better in my plans. At least with snakes, I dont feel bad selling any! The only one I could not sell is my VMS motley boy.. he is stuck with me!

Growing up, I had always had an interest in animals (which is why I am now a wildlife biologist), but I never thought I would be so into snakes!

You're fortunate to have been able to start early! I had many kinds of critters growing up, but my mother flatly refused to let me have a snake. Oh, Dad caught a garter for me to take for show-and-tell, and I always enjoyed the rat snakes, green snakes, and corns on the farm. I have no idea why it took me so long to get the first one as a pet. Like you, I will always have snakes from this point on. I can't imagine my home or my classroom without them.
 
I got started on corns when my 7th grade math teacher let me take care of his amel for the summer, and never in a million years thought I'd end up with a snake room in my own house along with a kink rescue program =) But I do, and I love it, and all of them. Definitely a hobby I will never quit.

I really wish I could get to an expo. My family is probably glad that I can't! Heaven only knows what I'd bring home!

And yes, you really ought to get a nice even 14. ;)

Yay for teachers with animals! Though I must confess that I wouldn't entrust my babies to students for an entire summer....
 
Well I think it made it a bit different because I came to school every morning early to go in and hold "Maizy" all year long, and he took a ranching job for the summer and had no one to turn to, so that's why I think he trusted me enough.

I would never trust my babies with someone else either though... =)
 
Oh, wow do we have more than I'd ever dreamed! At the beginning of July, we had one corn snake and one Brazilian rainbow boa. Now we have 28 corn snakes and no boa - it was traded for corn snakes. We now have science fair projects and (we hope) a source of some income (at least a break even!) for several years. Addictive? Naahhh... :)

Oh, that makes sense. I do send the class guinea pig and the mouse home with students for short holidays, but the snakes go home with me.

Everything started with a present from my girlfriend.After doing a lot of research to learn what I had,for two long years,I found CS.com.
After that everything just speed up.
I was fortunate to make a good friend (the only importer in Greece) and got my first shipment of snakes in 2006.
I had my mind full of projects that I liked and now I have 29 adults and subadults and about 50 babies (so far),all leading to what my signature says..
I pay a bigger apartment just to have a spare snake room.
I never though corns would mean so much to me back then...
 
Thirty years ago, I expected one day to have many.

One year ago, well...I have more than I, at that time, would have expected. :D
 
I definitely have way more snakes than I had ever planned. I had no idea how many morphs there were. It really is an addiction. I just don't want sooo many that it becomes a second job and not the hobby I once loved. :)

Excellent point, Jen. There's a huge difference between having and enjoying a manageable number (whatever that means for each individual) and being consumed by the work involved to the point where the pleasure is minimized.

Noe...gr, I love your signature line! I hope you get that magical creature even sooner than you expect. I look forward to the progression thread!

I put down that I have more corns than I expected and that I am "Un-happy" To be more precise I am un-happy that I dont have more! :rofl: I started with getting one snow for my wife after a pet frog died so she could have a pink snake and now I have 5 snakes with plans for many more.
 
i had 2 corns when i was in elementary school (and a milksnake) but i went on vacation and the neighbor boy that watched our animals held my snakes and they all got out when he didnt put lids back on right i only ever found 1 of them and sold it to a friend but then this last May i got my normal corn as a graduation present. now i have 10 corns, a cal king, and a red tail boa. amazing what can happen in a few months huh? and that is without being able to make it to daytona :(
