Stubborn Female

Here's the problem.
1 x Female 10 years old (I have had her sexed at 3 different places).
1 x Male 7 years old (Proven Breeder).

About 2 weeks ago I put these two together for about 2 hours, while he harrassed her continuously, nothing happened.

Last night I put them back together for 3 hours, same story.

Every time it seems as if hookup will take place, she wriggles away.

I have now decided to just leave them together for 2 weeks and hope for the best.

Has anyone got any ideas on what the problem could be?

At ten years old she's past her breeding peak, which seems to be at 6-8 years for mine. I've certainly had females breed at ten (and beyond) without problems, but in your case it might just be nature taking its course.

If she or the males are due to shed, it's worth putting them together immediately afterwards, as this is when their pheramones at at their highest and it might get her more in the mood.

Sometimes pairs just don't work. I have a male + female combo that won't even look at each other. I gave up after five years of trying with them! Sometimes the chemistry just isn't there.

Just curious, you only get 3-5 years of good breeding out of your females? That really stinks!

But back to the OP's question...the timing may just be off. I've had females that the males will court for weeks to even after the female's next shed before she finally accepts them. Plus, do you leave the pair together overnight? I've had innumerable instances where it took the male overnight or even a couple of days to finally breed the female. I find the evidence in the tub, but never see the actual mating...but there are fertile eggs when the proper time comes. And yes, some snakes simply refuse a certain mate. It happens and is why I always have a second choice pairing for each female.

Thanks, she shed 2 weeks ago when I first put them together.
She is definitely giving off scent because she is driving the poor guy crazy.
She also seems to be showing signs of ovulation as well.

Maybe as you say, they are just not compatible.

Not at all - they just hit their peak at 6-8, producing their largest clutches with the highest proportion of fertile eggs and the lowest rates of non-feeders. That's also the age at which I'm most likely to get successful double-clutching.

Before 6 they produce smaller clutches but with a high success rate. After 8, the size of the clutches starts to drop off by 3 or 4 eggs each year. Once past 10, the fertility/feeding success rates start to drop and this is especially marked in any second clutches. I've bred healthy females well into their teens and still had healthy hatchlings and found it worthwhile.

Some just won't give up. I have a "retired" 17 year old that still insists on double-clutching annually, despite not having seen a male in years! Whilst I appreciate the gesture, I wish she'd stop for her own sake. It does take it out of her.

Have you tried playing Barry White for their dates, it might just work!

I am willing to try just about anything right now. Seriously though, last night I put the male in with another of my females, and, BAM -literally within minutes a positive hookup.

I think I need to put the old girl out to retire.

Just a quick update. She is back in the blue, this after shedding about 3 weeks ago. Perhaps this one is the pre-breeding shed.
Anyway, I will put them together again once she sheds.
