I was reading the post Rich had up in the breeding area and part of it was that breeders don't always sex babies right. I was sure that Carol would triple check the sex before sending him out so I popped Azriel first, after re-reading Kathy's book. I was able to see both of his hemipenes. Tried popping Titan a few times saw nothing but what the book called scent glands. Tried again a few hours later still saw nothing. So Im thinking that Titan is a she and not a he, which means I got a nice ghost for 25 as a male.

Guess it was a good thing Rich posted that thread! Anyone else have this happen?

Not to be rude, but from what I've read, you have experience popping one snake. Maybe you should have someone with a little more experience try sexing it, and then, if it was sexed incorrectly, which can happen, you'd be best to take it up privately with the breeder rather than post their name. Doesn't sound like you've talked to this particualr breeder by the sounds of your post. JMO

Where'd you get the ghost? If you got it from petsmart or something I'd say sure. But if you got it from any breeder, I'd say it's a male if it was marked as one.

The odds of someone selling you a female marked as a male are vanishingly small. The odds are much higher of someone selling you a male that is marked as a female.

Not all snakes pop easily every time, but you only have to see a hemipene once to be sure it's a male--doesn't matter if it never pops male again. The reverse is not true--if you're popping, there's no way except odds (repeated tries) and your confidence in your abilities to pop to say a snake is a female, since what you're "finding" when you pop a female is an absence of hemipenes, but that snake could just be good at holding them in.

I have popped two snakes the one Carol sent me and the one Meg sent me but that was two years ago. If you re-read my post I did not say who I got Titan from, because I don't know. Friend got him/her at a show and did not get any info from him so I don't know a name. Its not really a big deal either way, don't plan one breeding any of my snakes it was just something I decided to check to to cure my boredom.

I think I have much more confidence in Carol's ability to sex snakes than your ability. Sorry. Two snakes doesn't give you a whole lot of experience. This was my first year breeding, and I sexed all my own hatchlings (70 of them). Obvious males did not need resexing, but anything that came out female was double and triple checked, and more males were found.
I just think it's in poor taste to post a thread and name a breeder by name, implicating they have made a sexing error, without having the decency to talk to them privately first. Again....JMO

I think Nicole is saying she practiced on a snake of known sex, the snake from Carol. Then tried her ghost, which was sold to her by someone else as a male, and so far she has been unable to pop out any hemipenes. I agree, there is no way Carol would sell you a male, and you get a female (unless there was a mix up in snakes!!) but if you don't know the reliability of the seller, then who knows.

Thank you Nanci. That was what I was saying I guess I was not clear enough for everyone. I never doubted Carol's sexing of the snake she sent me which is why I popped him first. And again, I never said the name of the man who sold the Ghost because I don't know.

The guy had a lot of snakes on his table so who knows. He did not check before selling it and had it labeled already. It could have been a mix up. No biggie.
