Ya most of the stuff I built that cage with was free off craigslist or stuff I had laying around the house. I think over all I have around $70 in to it total. Also yes the top door is one big door. I have my two ball pythons in there and they are not exactly the kind to want to dart for the door haha. I did for a while have my corn in there and as long as I opened it and did what I needed to do and get out and close it I was fine. I did find that when I tried to clean the cage and put new bedding in he did escape for about all of 30 seconds till I found him trying to sneak away from behind it on the hardwood floor lol.
It is how ever not light and I would hate to see the cost to ship something like that unless off course you are using a Uhaul and driving yourself. If you are just getting one snake im sure a glass enclosure will work just fine. I built this one because I had plans to get more snakes, and when I started the build I only had the 2 my corn (seth) and my female BP (Jess). I then found a male bp on craigs list who was badly taken care of. He had no hides, no heat and no form of decent humidity so when I got him he had 2 old bad shes still on him. I am quite frankly amazed he was still alive. He was big enough to eat full grown mice yet they had him on fuzzies so he was being way under fed (once a month with one fuzzy) so he was skinny and flabby. Now he is a plump healthy boy with a feisty attitude some times (only snake I own that has bitten me lol).
Something else that I find funny though, Many people say that ball pythons are picky eaters and that corns are very easy to feed. Well I have the opposite lol. My male ball will eat ANY THING I give him and my female though she wont eat rats she pounds mice without even thinking about it. Now my corn on the other hand.........he will only eat if he is in a dark feeding bin where he cannot be seen and even then sometimes it takes almost an hour before he will eat. He will however eat both mice and rats. The rats are very small and about the size of an adult mouse.
The thing I like about my corn is that he is very active and does not sit still for long when Im holding him. Where as with my bps are very mellow and slow going so if im just browsing online and want to have one of the snakes wrapped around my arm or neck while doing so I get one of the bps out and they just chill.
I will say though that my female Ball Python (Jess) is my favorite snake out of the 3. She is just so mellow and easy going that when ever some one comes over and wants to look at the snakes and get one out she is usually the first one I get out since I know she wont bite and is very calm.
