Black light

would a black light be in any way harmful if on at night time just for viewing? by all means not for heat or anything, but i read a post on here that black ligths may be harmful to a corn?

If you are going to use a light at night, I would suggest using a Red (Infrared) light. I have used these and have never seen a problem. I have heard about black and blue lighting causing problems with snakes. I personally used a black light for a while, and noticed that I never saw my snakes out when it was on, but they were always active in the day and evening. After I got the red light, they were out and moving about all the time.

Snakes can not see red light I know for a fact they can see white because they are nocturnal, but I also think that they can see a black light. I would also be afraid that it would cause harm to the snake’s eyes. I mean and there is no medicinal marijuana for a snake :grin01: so I would just stick with a red bulb.

can the infrared lights just be bought at any harware store? and wil lthey fit a regular light outlet?

Instinctively, corns are most active between dusk and dawn.

In their natural habitat this is when they do most of their foraging for food.

Just curious where this information is coming from. :shrugs:

I think they are talking about the typical red light bulbs you can get at any hardware or grocery store. Infrared bulbs are those ceramic ones that cost a fortune and do not emit visible light. :)

You will most likley have to look in a pet store, but like the home depot should carry them. I would gove them a call before you run up there. Hope I could help

Well I have a heat lamp that has a red light and all I ment is that it won't keep them from coming out. You don't need to worry about them hiding because they will not react to red lights as they will white.

I have one that is over 4 years old, 2 that are 3 years old, 2 that are roughly 2 years old, and some 04 hatchlings. I have seen everyone of them out and about during the day and night.

You have a clue as to why mine curls up all day (at least when I am around)?

Or is it just that he is timid or his personality?

might just be the snakes personality. How often do you handle him? I usually handle mine everyday if I have the time. I have also noticed that they are more active during the day when it is feeding day.

well I handle mine everday (minus the 48 hours after "lunch") sometimes twice a day, I think that happened twice... (morning and night)

If the snake is hiding when you are around, then it might still see you as a threat when you aren't actively holding it. and the only way to get around that is to handle it. so it may just be that it is too bright for the snake during the day and is just out and about at night going on naturla instinct.

You think that in time, with handling, it will come out in daytime? ( if it isnt too bright)

Not quite sure whether different lights are harmful or not but red light does not intefere with your eyes ability to adapt to the dark so i imagine it would be the most practical to use (assuming this is not somehow innappropriate for snakes but i don`t see how).We have red lights in with our snakes and it just means that at night you can go down and check on them etc. without disturbing them too much plus your eyes can adapt to being in another wise dark environment.

The Red bulbs at the hardware stors might give off heat but it is a minimal ammount, compared to the heat lamp. But I don't think that you should worry about a red bulb putting off to much heat. So go ahead and get one, the snake should be fine with it, and tell us how it works out' :wavey:
