Last Week's Vegas-area Herping Highlights

Sometimes Horned Lizards can be tricky to find, but on Wednesday morning, two were basking in the street - right on the blacktop pavement. Here's one:

Later that night I did some roadhunting in Arizona. My first snake of the trip was this young Longnose Snake:

Then I saw a snake that I've always wanted to find, but is hard to come across in Nevada (hence the road trip to Arizona). This Western Diamondback is the first one I've ever seen in the field:

The night wasn't over yet - although I've found California Kingsnakes in Nevada and California, this 3-1/2 footer was the first one I've ever found in Arizona:

I decided to check one more road on the way back to Vegas and I came across this yearling Mojave Rattlesnake:

On the following day I did some hiking and saw the coolest-looking Great Basin Fence Lizard ever:

Collared Lizards were out too:

The next day it rained and that brought out the Desert Tortoises:

This is the first juvenile tortoise I've ever seen:

One my final hike of the trip, I found this two-foot California Kingsnake:

It was a pretty awesome week!

Wow, great critter spotting!! The collared lizards around here are very brightly colored. Never seen a rattlesnake by us, sadly.

WOW! I LOVE Horned Lizards! I've always wanted one (and never will, judging from what I read about how difficult they are to keep alive in captivity), and if I'd seen a desert tortoise, forget it! It would have come home with me for sure! My Ex grew up with one for a pet (he's from southern California), and I love tortoises.

GREAT photos. I don't like rattlesnakes and have seen enough of them in the wild to last a lifetime, but everything else was coooooool beyond measure!

U must have been herping in my backyard, I grew up catching and releasing most of these critters. Sept the rattlers. We enjoyed them from afar :)

Very nice photography! I love the photos of the Horned Lizards. Just precious. Thanks for sharing your field herping memories.

Wow, that's a lot of amazing finds. There doesn't seem to be many snakes or lizards to find here in Wisconsin, so my field herping trips are usually pretty bleak. I miss Oregon haha.

What a great trip! You were really lucky to see the baby tort. I've only seen a hatchling Gopher tort (the Florida equivalent) twice. I _love_ horned lizards.
