Since I have no pippies to keep me busy, I've been wandering around at night trying to find snakes. I haven't found many snakes yet, but I found plenty of other fun things. I don't have pictures of the coyotes, screech owls, or javalina. Or the western shovelnose I saw and let get away before I could make up my mind whether to catch it or photograph it (ending up doing neither). But everyone else I've seen so far is represented here.

No pics of nightjars, either.

No pics of jackrabbits, either, now that I'm trying to think of stuff to occupy 10 characters.

Thanks for sharing, nice pics. I'm always jealous of the critters people get to live with in other areas of the country/world. What is that in the third picture?

That's a ringtail. They're relatives of raccoons and coati-mundi. It was my first time seeing one in the wild. The pic was from quite far away in the dark, so I was happy to be able to get anything at all out of it!

COOL critters!

What is that little yellow and brown striped lizard? so adorable

And what in the HECK is that HUGE spider??? *shivers* I was eating lunch when I got to those pics and quickly lost my apatite. You are a braver person than me!

Man Steph - I am jealous! You find some awesome stuff. I will be back out there last week of August/1st week of September. We definately need to go out if you have time!

Cattsy, sorry about your lunch. That's a neonate western banded gecko. It's the same species as the other geckos, just a baby. Regarding the spider, I'm assuming you're talking about the one on my hand. That's just our native tarantula. I guess it's an Arizona blond? Unless we have more than one species. I guess I should look it up . . .

Katie--yes! The only thing that may be tricky with timing is that Kristi is moving the last week of August and coming back to defend sometime the first week of September (probably). But between when she leaves and comes back I should be free. Let's be in touch.

Excellent shots!

Man that little atrox was simply GORGEOUS!! That's one I haven't had the pleasure of finding yet...

Pepper, seems like there are plenty of tarantulas out and about right now. You could find one, I bet.

Thanks Chris. That little atrox was nice, too. Quite calm and collected and let me practice with my homemade snake hook. I didn't womanhandle him much, but I feel much better about using the stick, now, and very fond of the snake for being nice.

Also, does anyone know what those red things are on the lateral, proximal chelicerae of the wolf spider? They're hard and slick. I'm wondering if they maybe function like a tendon or ligament to keep the chelicera retracted when not being actively used?

I will be there 8/28 through I think 9/5 or 9/6. I have to be in Prescott on the 28th for a wedding but other than that no plans yet for the week. I think my aunt wants to take me to Tonopah (spelling?) for a day...but other than that nothing. I also think it is going to be just me this trip so I will have plenty of time available.
All I know is I need to find some native wildlife to photograph out there already. I have had such horrible luck thus far on all my trips...

I hadn't ever seen a ringtail in the wild either, Eric! I was psyched.

Thanks Mrs. Z, I think that must have been a big girl, seeing as how big it was. She was very nice, too. I saw some the night before that that I didn't pick up because they were very jumpy. This one, though, was niiiiiice and easy.
