Hi! :)

Shelliebear

Team Snug
Hello. My name is Shellie. I'm new to snakes, but my fiance is not.
We just bought a baby corn snake, an ultramel motley. To be quite honest, I've read this site's little dictionary for snake color and pattern morph codes, but I still struggle to put the pieces together. My 1 month old Cheesecake is an ultramel motley, which I know a little about, and as you can see in my signature she is a het stripe ph. caramel. I don't know what that last part means, so if you could describe that to me I'd greatly appreciate it. (Though I know het=heterozygous, I'm not sure how this relates to snakes. Is it the same as the biology terms? Or does it mean something totally different?)
Cheesecake is our baby! We love her a lot, and play with her often. She never bites. She is a sweetie pie, and has quite a personality--sometimes she'll be on the go (and NEVER seems to wind down) and other times she'll be very still and calm and snuggle in the palm of your hand.
I'm thinking I'd like to breed snakes someday, especially corns, as my fiance is very interested in doing so. I might like it as well. :)
I have a few questions about my snake that I will post in their respective categories on the forums.
Other than that, thank you for reading about my little red friend. :)

Welcome! You will find this forum very friendly & helpful!
Be sure to post pics of your snake, we like pictures. :)

Hello & welcome!
I'm not sure I understood your question, so if I miss the mark, sorry. Homo is showing the genetic trait. Het is carrying the trait & having the ability to pass it along to offspring but not actually showing the trait. Almost all corn genes are recessive & both parents must be either homo or het for all or some of the babies to show the trait. However, as an example, if you breed an animal that is het for something to one that isn't, all of the babies won't show that trait, but some of them will be het for it. But since you can't tell which ones are by looking at them, you would label the whole clutch "possibly het whatever" or "ph" or "poss het".
Here are a few links that might help you, if you haven't already seen them. First is a list of common terms used on this site or with reptiles in general.

Then a site with pictures & the breakdown of genes for just about every corn morph there is. It also has a genetic calculator that is fun to play with, especially if you are thinking about breeding. This is the calculator.

And the website.

Hope that helped some!

I don't know how I missed that you're in Spokane. I grew up in Spokane. I currently live in western WA, near Everett. :)
Have you been to Reptile Addictions, in the Valley?

Oh, my goodness--I love reptile addictions! The breeder we got our little Cheesecake from works there. AMAZING place. :)
Spokane isn't half bad.

I stopped in on my last visit to Spokane. I think I met who you are talking about.

I like Spokane. It took leaving to appreciate it.

Alright! I got some cute pictures of my little girl up. Not the best quality, though--I do apologize. My phone is only 2.0 mega pixels. :(

Hey guys

Thats funny that one of you guys mentioned reptile addiction because Shellie and I actually got Cheesecake from a guy named Josh who works there but does breeding on the side. He's a cool guy he was originally going to keep cheesecake for breeding since she's a pretty cool color morph but he sold her to us with a ten gallon tank for a steel. If any of you guys are in spokane and want to check out what hes got just let me know I can give you his phone number and or email. :madeuce:
