Mexican Milksnakes

ArpeggioAngel

Around Here Somewhere....
Does anyone here have Mexican Milksnakes? We had some donated for our Daytona raffle and I am considering entering for them. I have been doing some reading up on them online today but wondered if anyone here had them that could give me some first hand experience about them? Just general info - temp requirements, temperaments, size etc?

So far these guys seem really cool and docile and I love how they look!

I have a male Mexican BLACK Milksnake, so I don't know if that's the same kind as you're mentioning. He is about 3 1/2 feet long at 3 years old. He is always hungry. He is flighty and hand-shy, and prone to musking, but with that, he still doesn't bite. He is very curious about what's going on outside of his viv, and can often be seen with his head up, looking straight out the glass. I am very fond of him--I just have to wipe him down with a damp cloth and wash my hands when I'm done handling him :).

No, these are different than the MBK's. Smaller, tri-colored milksnakes. The hatchlings here right now almost remind me of a scarlet or coral snake - especially their little tiny heads!

Yeah, just forget I said anything--mine's a King Snake (Mexican Black). For some reason I keep getting those mixed up! LOL! I've never owned any milk snake (although I'd like to :), so I'm no help.

Sorry 'bout that!

I love them, as a matter of fact, I will be looking for some tonight. The first pic is of a male I collected a few years ago, and the second is of a female I acquired from a local near the male. As far as temperament, they can be slightly flighty, they like to hide (very much a fossorial animal), and are very nocturnal; they will take to handling and can be very docile, especially if you get them when they are young. In the wild, they are primarily lizard eaters, WC animals will sometimes take rodents, but they can take a while (like my female below, she has taken over a year, and is only eating scented mice). As far as babies, they are very difficult to start on mice, but once they do, your good. I have tube feed babies in the past and had success starting them that way. Good luck, hope you get them.

Thanks Mike. The guy who donated them said they are eating f/t pinks already. Since Daytona is still two weeks away - I will be attempting to feed them here myself so hopefully the info given is accurate.

I was actually quite surprised at how calm they seemed for a milksnake. Most milksnakes I have handled (hondos, pueblans, sinaloans) have been very flighty.

They are nothing like the aforementioned milks, much much calmer.

Sounds right up my alley - I much prefer calmer snakes! I think I will definately enter the raffles and hopefully be bringing these guys back home with me then. Thanks very much for the info!

HAHA!!! I was about to say something but you got it worked out in your head fine there :D Alot of people do mix up the two so dont feel too bad :smash:

But yeah it's either a Mexican Black Kingsnake or simply a Black Milksnake (MBK's are mostly solid black from the egg, Black Milks start tri colored and change to black and get a bit bigga) :crazy02:

And to the Mexican Milksnake effect, I have seen them and think they are my favorite of the tri color Milks snakes!! That's definitely what I would choose if I wasn't so into solid color snakes myself :bird:
