Meet Clyde, my Craigslist rescue

LauRuffian

Perpetual Newbie
I really need to stay away from that "Oh, Craigslist" thread--second time a snake I've posted about there has wound up going home with me. ;)

He's not nearly as severely emaciated as poor Runway (my other CL rescue) was, but he's still noticeably underweight. More concerning (perhaps a bit alarming) is the beating his skin has taken--scrapes, bites, and scars, particularly in the front quarter of his body. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm seeing. I'm thinking the damaged scales could've come from prey bites (they fed live only), scraping his prominent spine along the screen lid, burns from an improper heat source, poor health, and/or poor husbandry, though I'm not sure what the combination was. The owners did tell me their ball python (also since sold) developed a skin infection/burn from lying in his own waste. Um... :eek1:

I do want to add that the owners were very kind people who seemed to have acted on impulse buying him and a female at a reptile show a year ago (one of those, "You bought WHAT?" when they got home stories) and did the right thing recognizing they were not the right home for him, particularly when the female became gravid. I applaud them for that recognition, and that it came now, and not when he was as bad off as Runway. (FWIW, they sold the female a while back to someone who had experience breeding corns and that person successfully hatched the eggs.)

Regardless, he's ours now and will be babied along with the rest of ours. ♥

They say he was sold to them at the reptile show as a bloodred stripe--yes? No? I'm getting feedback he looks more like a pinstripe motley, though that's a new one to me.

Now! Pics! All of these were taken as part of his intake--marking what his body condition was like at the starting point:

Prominent spine (I know this angle exaggerates it, but it really is noticeable when handling him--he feels delicate)

I was surprised he was 400g. He feels very thin in my hands, so I think what was throwing me was he's thin for his body frame, but is actually a deceptively bigger snake. My goal right now is to round him out--it's more about getting him to a healthy shape and "feel" than a number, but I estimate he needs another 100-150g at least. Funny, my girl Zuri is 330g, but she is properly round and healthy, so she feels bigger in my hands. She's just a smaller girl.

Seriously, this dude is beat up. :(

But he's a pretty boy regardless. :)

You softie, you!
He is really pretty, I'm glad you're at it again.
Good luck and you know we want lotsa updates <3

I love the picture in the grass. His stripes are so pretty. I'm so glad Clyde has a good home now. When he fills out, he will look awesome. I hope his wounds continue to heal and diminish over time.

You inspired me to check my local listings...that was a mistake and now I'm very sad. Protip: don't look for rescues if you can't actually take any on. It's just incredibly depressing. Humans can really suck...

Thanks guys. Yes, Dragonling, it can be depressing. :( Thankfully I don't see a lot of skinny/beat up snakes on our local CL; it's mostly people selling their pet-quality amels and normals because they have to move/getting into another hobby/was a kid's pet and kid moved out or lost interest/etc.

I fed Clyde today, and I can say appetite was clearly not his issue:

He gulped down that weanling in rapid fashion, giving me a good rattling when I walked by. (BACK OFF! MINE!)

Sweet boy. I wanted to give him more, but I know it's best not to shock his system and rather ease him into regular feeds. I'll feed him weanlings every 5 days or so for the first 3 feeds, then will move him on to weekly adults. I didn't dust this mouse with vitamin powder because I wanted to be sure he'd take f/t and feared it might mess with the scent, but next time I'll add it as well.

My 9yro son was with me as we were feeding his nearly-2yro girl and I used it as an opportunity to teach him what a skinny snake vs. healthy snake looked like. I took out a loaf of bread to show him proper shape, heh, and he understood Clyde was too triangular. Sweet boy.

That is an awesome picture. It makes me smile to see Clyde devour that mouse. He looks like a wonderful snake. I'm glad his bad days are over.

So glad to hear you gave Clyde a great forever home! We need more people like you out there.

It's why we do what we do! I have been appalled by some of my rescues, the other day I got an anery (my baby anery Slash died in a very bad cat vs. viv vs. desk accident a while back, and this guy was on CL and needed a new home so...). I always ask for a discount or some of the viv supplies or whatever else it might come with but the lady said no, her son was selling him because he was tired of him and wanted a chameleon instead and the accessories were for the other snake in the cage. Really? Please, at least LIE to me and tell me the kid needs the money for college, he needs a car, he needs a kidney...

I picked him up and couldn't hold my tongue (have I EVER been able to???) and as I was walking away I turned back and said "he will now have an amazing FOREVER home, I hope you don't get bored with the chameleon like you did this baby and have another disposable pet to list on Craigslist". I don't even know if the snake HAD a name (they said it was a female, it's not), I didn't ask, I would have changed it regardless (they usually don't come when called anyway).

So now I have "Slash 2.0", in honor of his fallen comrade. He is about 2, has the BEST disposition, comes right up to you in the viv, loves to be held, is just the epitome of "good catch". I even fed him after 3 days with all the other beasties (I usually wait a week) but he was so comfortable with everything I thought I'd try. I got him out, he checked me out up and down and gave me kisses on my neck and cheek (I know, I know, no hanky-panky on the first date, but I couldn't help it!!!). He played the zombie-mouse-dance game perfectly, chowed down, went back in his temporary 10 gallon and is a happy camper.

Score one for the good guys.

(Sorry so long, it's been a while since I've been here and missed all of you! Besides, I just don't have it in me to post once sentence responses.)

Wow, what a great rescue!!! Glad he's in good hands now. Looking forward to picture updates.
