This is a sterilite that I found at Wal Mart - around 92 Quarts, I think. It has nearly the same dimensions as my 20 Gallon Long aquariums but is a LOT lighter!
It isn't as crystal clear as glass, but it is great until I get my racks built.
I wonder if something like nylon cargo straps could be used to secure the top. Has anyone tried anything like that? I would think that a couple of those with quick release snaps would be more secure and easier to manage than binder clips and heavy objects. I've never done it...I'm just sort of making this up as I go along...
if you use something heavy on the lid, make sure it doesn't cause the lid to push down in the center and rise up at the edges! I used to weigh down lids for my turtles, but quickly found out the weight has to be on at least two edges....
bungee cords are not good secure items either! They make mini cargo straps that work well if you don't mind bright yellow straps
That sounds like a great and inexpensive idea, but how do you heat it. I am going to do this for my adult while I build her viv and I don't know how I am going to heat it without either melting the plastic or burning down my house.
Whatever I get to heat it I wan't to be able to use it on my glass viv when it is finished. Any ideas? Thanks.
You can use Flex Watt heat tape to heat them. It is the same stuff used inside of Racks. Just get a few strips of 11" and place under the container with a therm attached.
you can use a Cobra brand heat mat with those sterilites. cobra's get to 100 degrees. not hot enough to melt plastic (as long as you don't have it on a metal surface). i have mine on a sterilite brand plastic utility rack. it works just fine for me and has for a few years now.
