always liked snakes but never brave enough to own one until my 8 yr old boy has just talked me into buying one!! only know the stuff i have read online and what they told me in the shop. he is amazingly beautiful tho, and of course i wanna do this right, so if anyone can give me any more information or tips that im gonna need to know i would be most grateful. :)

With an eight year old of my own, I would make sure that he is always supervised around the snake. If it is a small (hatchling size), I would make sure that he knows how fragile it is.

And welcome to the Awesome world of snake ownership.

Congratulations...and welcome to the forum as well as the wonderful world of snakes.
I am also fairly new to the forum and can tell you first hand the great people on here are very knowledgeable and helpful. I have already been helped through a few issues I thought were major problems but with their help I was able to understand what was going on and get back on the right track. Hope you enjoy your time here.......this forum has replaced my myspace addiction....lol

.......it is true I used to spend all my "play time" on myspace, now every time I turn the laptop on this is the first place I go, then I get so wrapped up in reading posts and learning lots of new stuff that I barely make it on any other site.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

hi thanks for the welcome !! i will always watch the 8yr old, but tbh hes fab with the new arrival, he WILL be the new reptile man when he gets older, watches national geographic for fun!! the only maybe problem i got with the little snake is he seems really shy, is this normal, i'm tryin to take it really slow with him and just put my hand in with him sooner than trying to pick him up, is this the right thing to do? when the fella in the shop showed him to me he just kinda grabbed him, gently..dont wanna freak him out!!

That sounds like a fine approach. If he does give you an attitude about being held such as going into an S shape, hissing, tail rattling, etc...go ahead and pick him up anyway. If you don't, he will realize that it's easy to get you to leave him alone. ;) Provide good head and body support when you hold him. I always watch my 7 and 8 yo sons carefully...they hold them gently, but they get a little ADD-ish, so if something else catches their attention, they've been known to place the snakes on the coffee table and walk away.

eek!! not a good move, this little fella moves like lightning!! would never find him again!!will definitely try that then thanks for that!!

LBoz....thats funny....can't imagine them just putting them down on the table and walking away. LOL
