I fed my new snake for the first time friday. I got two frozen fuzzies from the pet shop. defrosted them in a ziplock bag in a bowl of hot water. the water was vvery hot close to boiling so i'm afraid I may have partially cooked the mice. the reason i'm so worried is that although he ate without issue. he went into his hide after eating and hasn't come out with the exception of yesterday when I took him out to see if he was still alive. is this normal behaviour? i've only had him a week. thanks.

Perfectly normal.... Once it has eaten all it wants to do is retire and digest it's meal somewhere quiet...
After feeding leave your snake alone for 48hr.... So it can do the digesting..

I shouldn't think so, but thats by no means a definitive answer...
I wouldn't worry about it...
Pinkies don't take long to defrost, especially in very hot water....
Next time (6-7 days from the last feed) check the pinkie on a regular basis to see when it's soft right through...

It takes less than a minute to thaw a pink. I am sure some of mine are partially cooked, too! You could try thawing in warm water for about a minute, then when you are ready to feed, hold it under your hottest tap water for a few seconds. I wish all mice thawed to fast!

Too hot water destroys vitamins and at 42°C protein denatures. And since extra vitamin supplementation is tricky, because vitamin overdose can be letal, it is essential that the snake gets the natural ones from its prey.

And why defrosting in water that hot anyway? Everything above normal mouse body-temperature (38,0° - 39,5°C) is unnecessary and probably can hurt the snakes mucosa.

School boy error. I'll know better next time. Just for the record though, I did let the mice cool off before I gave them to the snake.

Its true that cooking the mice, decreases the vitamin and protein content of the mice. But, feeding them like this once in a great great while, shouldn't hurt. As long as the mouse has cooled to around 90-100F (I don't know the Celsius conversion?) by the time you feed. Next time use warm tap water to defrost.

BTW, Wasn't there a person on this forum that fed snakes boiled chicken parts without a problem? :sidestep:

hi all. thanks for all the replies. just wanted to let you know my snake was out of his hide and wandering around his tank when I got up this morning. cheers.

No No No don't link that post again. Too many headaches reading that one.

BRENT.....
WE NEED YOU AGAIN!!!!!!

Sorry for the link. Just wanted to put the story straight. I am not agreeing or disagreeing with it. Just wanted to let the OP know that "cooked" food items MAY not be a big issue especially if it only happens a few times. I do not have any proof one way or the other with Vinny's feeding practices.

That is kind of an interesting idea. I wonder if you could save money by feeding meats other than mice to your snakes?

I have to throw myself under the bus here. PJ wasn't the only one to link to that thread. If you look at my last post, you will notice that the word "chicken", is underlined. That's actually a link to the same post. :sidestep:

McDonald's, Hamburger/Cheeseburger for a Euro. Isn't that like three US dollars? What a rip off! :bang:
