2 viv questions

Gintha

*stretches* I'm out!
1) I just found a store here that sells aspen! So heres the question... is Yesterday's News decent, or is aspen way better? Read a LOT of substrate posts but not many mentioned YN ~,~ They are about the same price so $$ not an issue =)

2) I use a Hagen terarrium UTH and was wondering if there is a way to hook a thermostat up to it? Or do you have to buy one with a thermostat attatched? (Yes, I'm a thermostat newb =P) Or is the something that uses a censor and turns off the power at the highest set temp?

to answer the first question, i would say go with aspen. It's my favorite out of all the substrates and it allows your snake to burrow.

Six and half a dozen.

Ask to have a look at a handfull of each and go with the least dusty one.

we just bought a huge bag of aspen chips for 12 bucks at petco. You have to look where they keep the rodents though, I think they like to hide it and charge you for the "reptile" version substrate. :D

oh, i bought a bag of Aspen for $3 at my pet store and a half of the bag gave me a nice thick layer. So i guess i have enough to last me about 2 months. ITs shredded and its not dusty at all.

This stuff is all 100% dust free or you get your money back hehe =) And the store only sells kittens and fish and f/t mice so I'm not worried about it being contaminated by anything, its also in sealed plastic packages. Its around $18 for enough to put a nice layer in her tank twice.

:-offtopic (Its the place I WAS getting my F/T mice.. but at $2.97 for a small adult mouse (Treasure eats 2 a week) its a little pricey, just ordered my first batch from The Candian Mouseman who it turns out I spent 1/2 my childhood right next door to LOL (Moms old business partner is their neighbor =D). Hoping they are better quality than the ones I WAS getting which it turns out were likely frozen alive =(

to answer ? #2 take a look at these http://www.zoomed.com/html/rheostats.php

:*)

Why not just move her up to rat pups or a medium mouse instead? And I also want to know how you know they were frozen alive? Most mouse producers humanely destroy with CO2 and then freeze. Or was this a PETA person who told you this???

What does it suggest of a store that asks you to call 1 day ahead to get a frozen feeder, other wise all you can get is live, and no fresh killed. Hence I do not buy feeders from there.

Burrowing substrates...

Just a noob question...if you have a material that your snake can and will burrow into, won't it be a bit more difficult to handle the snake? Or do you just wait until he comes out? Thanks.

to answer #2 you can make a rheostat cheap just use the search function for rheostat and look for Make a rheostat for $7!!! very easy to do i did it a few days ago and it has worked great!

A) Please don't insult PETA.. I've been a member for years. The majority of us are not idiots.. in fact most of us have at least one PhD and also belong to WSPA and GP.

B) You can tell if a mouse was frozen alive by the state of the tissue when its examined under a decent microscope.

C) The pet store was just fined $10,000 for animal cruelty and the charge pertained to her freezing feeder animals alive, 4th charge.. next time shes closed. =P

And, yes, I looked at the mouse tissue under the microscope =P Was bored and figured I own a miscroscope.. might as well use it... plus its part of my thesis paper hehe

Wow! That is amazing that anyone would consider freezing adult mice alive. Not only is it inhumane, but more difficult too. They couldn't be put in plastic bags because they would chew their way out. It would be so much easier (and more humane) to just thump them, breaking their neck, or set up a CO2 system. Is it possible that they were "put to sleep" with CO2, and then frozen while unconscious, but not yet dead? I don't know if that would give the same results under the microscope.

I am sure there are some PETA members who are not crazy. But since it is PETA's goal to end ALL pet ownership, I don't understand why a pet owner would support them. There are far less extreme groups that are committed to improving animal welfare without banning any and all use of animals.

I never stated that PETA members weren't intelligent, I said they were nuts. I had a lady literally slavering at the mouth because I told her there were no shampoos on the market that did not contain products that had been tested on animals. She totally freaked out and went on about how PETA had given her the list of companies that tested and that I must hate animals.....I couldn't believe it! These are the same people that release lab animals, and will poison a hunting dog because they're against the killing of animals. Makes no sense! And that algae site was really cute!

im sorry but i would rather have drugs tested on rats and mice before they are given to people that can potentially cure cancer, cure alzheimers, and treat millions of diseases and disorders.

This really doesn't belong here and has the potential of starting a big debate that is off topic and would be rude to engage in for the fact it would hijack the post.

So... hopefully we'll all play nice and get back on topic, or just not respond at all, right? :)

I'm 100% against animal testing.. can test drugs on living tissue of dead people (Aren't life support systems great?) And with the number of criminals "put to death" for their crimes in a year.. theres PLENTY of corpses to go around =P And I can recommend a few people for live testing (mwa ha ha.. PERFECT thing for ex's huh? =P) Not as nuts as I sound.. if you've SEEN what they do to those poor test animals you'd be the same way.. how'd you like to be cut open with no pain killers? Or have your brain exposed and disected while you're still alive? The Canadian section of PETA that I belong to is against crap like that.. not the no animals in captivity thing.. heck.. people (for the most part) give better lives to animals than nature does. As for non-animal tested shampoos.. Pantene is 100% non-animal tested.. all of its ingrdients... I have the chemical anaysis here with around 40 signatures to back that (Did a paper for GP and needed the chem an. for my allergies =/)

Sorry for the blerb =P As you can see, am very passionate about animals =)
