2010 Spring/Summer Photo Contest Prize Donations Needed!

Jadie.Glitch

:) colubridstudios.com :)
PLEASE NOTE: In order to bring more interest in at one time, this is tentatively going to be one of two photo contests a year as opposed to the multiple contests we've seen in the past. If you're interested in entering this year then now could be your chance!!

We're looking for prize donations for the 2010 Photo Contest which will be posted in the next couple days.
Below is a list of some suggestions for donations. We are planning on having 3 placings in 5 categories unless things changes, at which point I will modify this thread to reflect the category changes.

Categories

Corn Snake Only
Reptile & Amphibian
Miscellaneous Critters
All Animal Digital-Manipulation
Fresh Entrant*

__________________________________________________

*The requirement to be able to enter the "Fresh Entrant" category is that you
have never won a Photo Contest on CornSnakes.com before.
This new category is being implemented in order
to give everyone a fair chance at winning.

With things as they stand now we need a minimum of 8 prizes for the winners to choose from. This is a combination US and International contest, so some prizes we will need must be easily transferable for over seas, such as Amazon.com & eBay Gift Cards for example. We are looking in the range of $15-25 for any Gift Cards/Certificates.

Donation Suggestions

Cornsnakes.com Contributor Membership
Amazon.com Gift Card
eBay Gift Card
Gift Certificates for reptile related purchases (2010 hatchlings, etc.)
New reptile supplies (bowls, hides, plants, etc.)
Reptile related books, prints, t-shirts, etc.

~If you have any suggestions for other prizes, please let me know so I may add them~

if u think its possible than i would give this lil blood het amel, charcoal ph. caramel, anery male to a winner in europe!?

greetings,
roman

Wow, yes please! Thank you so much for the donation! I hope we get some entrants in Europe because they'll sure be pleased. He's a keeper!

To encourage more live prizes, I must denote that the winner, not the donator, will be expected to pay shipping costs on live animals. It's a win/win both ways. The donator gets to feel good about an amazing donation, and the winner gets a great animal by paying a fraction of the price it's worth.

The information regarding who is responsible for shipping will be declared in the Official Contest Rules once they're posted.

How are you going to determine what's Amateur or Advanced? It seems like a difficult distinction. There are some people on here who are incredible photographers and some people just have a rinky-dink camera phone.

In any case, I'll pony up 1.1 '09 amel mots as a prize. I'll get pics later.

Hmm...

Our main concern with making these categories was so that everyone got a fair chance at winning a prize and having fun.

But you're right, that could get rather sticky. I honestly feel like I have an eye to be able to tell the difference at first glance, but I wouldn't want to risk hurting anyone's feelings. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we could fairly and kindly make this distinction, or should we do away with the segregation all together?

Also, THANK YOU FOR THE DONATION! You rock :D.

BUMP: I'd like to have at least most of the donations slots more or less filled in order to stimulate participation as well as facilitate prizes once the contest is over. I can't justify beginning without there being prizes.

When I enter photos in the county fair we decide if we are amateur or professional (advanced in this case). I have an amazing camera, adobe photoshop and I think I take beautiful pics so in this case I would probably enter myself in advanced. Maybe based on camera and editing software? Idk if it should get that technical though.

I'd like to chip in for a Cornsnakes.com Contributor Membership.
(maybe somewhat strange as I'm not a contributing member myself yet, but I'll fix that soon :D)

To be honest, the best way to normally run photo contests is divide them between Pro and Am is by camera and self determination. You give better prizes for those who enter into the Pro competition because they're gambling that they're the best of the best, whereas the Amateur competition is based more around the "fun" of the competition and a slightly less valuable prize.

Or you could do it based on P&S cameras vs. DSLR/SLR cameras. I'd also allow slight photo manipulation as most people who would enter the Pro competition probably shoot in some form of a RAW mode where the camera does no manipulation to the photo and renders it in a RAW format that may need some saturation/contrast/sharpening to get it to where the photographer originally viewed it. I would allow RAW photo editing softwares such as Adobe Camera Raw, Adobe Lightroom, Gimp, DPP, and whatever the Nikon software is where people can boost the image without truly manipulation pixels in a way that misrepresent what was truly taken.

All just suggestions of course and feel free to shoot me an email if you would like me to help out. - [email protected] or pruddock@paytonruddockphotographycom.

Good luck with the contest!

Awesome, thanks!! I'll add that in right now. Hey, also, if you enter and happen to win, you could choose your own prize and only have to pay for one membership :roflmao:. I'm so cheap, I'd probably do that, haha. (unless there was a live prize involved, in which case I'm a sucker for those)

Sent you a message!

Hmmm... I'd like to donate a prize this time around, but I'm going to have to think on it a little bit here... and have a consult with my bank account. LOL!

I'll let you know. :)

Thanks for getting the ball rolling, JG!

Sure, np! I was waiting for one to happen and when it never did I thought I'd take the initiative. Also, I know what you mean about bank accounts, lol! I wanted to at least contribute a Membership, but we'll have to see how things go. I wish I had some hatchlings to speak of this year that I could give, but maybe next year *sigh*.

I'll decide for you. YES!!! That would be so amazing!

Or you could wait until next contest so I could have a shot at them :grin01:

Let me know what you decide upon :D

No problem.
Yes that would be funny, to choose my own price. Little problem there... I'd have to win :D
And a live price would be by definition to tempting to pass up!!

Hmm.. Yea, that would be hard.. But from whats been said it sounds like by the type of camera. I have taken some awesome pictures, at least I think I have.. But then I don't have a good camera and need really good lighting to take them. Lol. So, I don't know what I'd consider myself. I also don't edit them at all, so I'm not sure.. :shrugs:

Only issue with going by what kind of camera is that photography is more about what type of light you have and how well you KNOW your camera than what type of camera you have. Case in point - Chase Jarvis. The man can do more with an iPhone camera than 95% of people can with a Hasselblad camera set up and Prophoto lights. If you don't believe me check it out - http://www.chasejarvis.com/#s=0&mi=2&pt=1&pi=10000&p=5&a=0&at=0 - The gallery navigation is on the right side of the screen. Enjoy...

I will donate a 15oz Coffee Mug that has a Bloodred Corn on it and says "I love my Bloodred Corn Snake"(the inside of the mug is maroon). I will also pay to ship it to whoever wins in Canada or the US. To see it click on the link below and then click the various views to see a sample mug. Note that the sample mug is not the exact prize mug. I customized the prize to read as I stated above. I have placed the order for it today, so hopefully it will come before the contest closes.
