2012 surprises!

Hey all, I've been lurking on this site for a bit now, soaking up all kinds of useful info. We're new to breeding, and had a clutch of 14 eggs laid about 64 days ago. There has been constant activity in the past few days, with 8 of the 13 viable eggs pipping. As i'm typing this, the 3rd little one just came fully out of the egg, our first Amel! This is a surprise, as we bred an Amel female to a Ghost male, and were expecting triple het normals.I got a text from my girlfriend this morning that one of the babies pipped, and it looked like an albino! Turns out our male must have a hidden recessive amel gene, as nowhere in his history that we know of is there any amel.

Sorry for the fuzzy phone pic, but we weren't sure if these eggs would even make it, as mom decided to lay on TOP of the lay box, and a couple were down beside it.

Here's the very first hatchling to pop out.. apparently no one informed it that it's best to wait until the umbilical is dropped.. We took it and put it in a 6qt bin with damp papertowl, and the next day the cord had dropped.. still goin strong!

As of right now, the odds are looking pretty good, 8 have pipped, 3 normal hets, 5 Amels. I know Amels are extremely common, but it's pretty exciting for us, as it's the first time we've proven out a het :D

Congratz on the pretty little ones :) It's always exciting to see hidden genes! I was overjoyed last year when I had snows pip when i thought they were going to be all amels

Well, looks like the odds were on our side with our first ever clutch. We ended up with 9 amels and 4 normals triple het. Pretty exciting stuff for us!
