When my parents took my brothers and I there as kids, the place was a true paradise. Especially for a bunch of kids looking for reptiles. It was pretty much wilderness. I remember catching a HUGE yellow rat snake that was sunning in a palm tree. Then another day I outfoxed a big gopher tortoise that thought he was too smart for me and kept sliding down into his burrow everytime he saw me. One trip my brother Ronnie and I walked down the sand road that went to the end of the pass and I have never before nor since seen so many snake trails in my life as I did on that road that time.
One time I caught a hermit crab that was a true monster. Filled up one of those huge conch shells. I may have a photo of that around somewhere.
Another trip Connie and I were walking down to the pass and we walked inland to the bay side. I spotted a snake trail that led into a small area of sea oats and didn't come out. So I circled around it, spiralling into the center until I found the critter. A really nice young diamondback rattlesnake!
Of course, lizards were everywhere. This trip there was some sort of gecko living right outside our room that hung around the light each night. One year at one of the places we stayed there was a population of curly tailed lizards living there. Probably a good two dozen of them that I saw. Next year we went down there, the lizards were gone, probably from the large cat population then present.
Finding all kinds of seashells, and even an occasional petrified sharks's tooth while beachcombing. Going snorkelling and having all sorts of fish playing around you hoping that your digging in the sand will unearth something for them to eat.
The birds on the beach are nearly all dog tame. The blue herons will follow you anywhere if you have a fishing rod.
Sigh..... Maybe I shouldn't have taken that mini vacation. I'm about ready to sell it all and become a beach bum.
