A question about substrate

i keep my hatchlings on paper towel while they're small enough to be housed in the shoebox size bins, then switch to aspen when they move up a size. since i started my collection with mostly hatchlings the same summer, i have lots of shoebox size bins that i use as feed tubs for those same snakes (which are now mostly over 300g). works out great! i know a lot of people don't like the fuss of using a feed tub, but i really think it's the way to go...i clean while they eat, and since i don't always handle my snakes a lot it still gives them some hands-on time. i don't use anything in the feed tubs...feed right on the plastic, and wipe/clean off when done. most of my snakes also get in to feed mode when i put them in the tubs, and they all (almost) eat right away, no hassles, no need to cover them or turn the lights off or leave them for extended periods.

They have those mats at my dollar store. 50 cents a piece. 8 bucks plus shipping? Ripoff.

I used to use paper towels as substrate, but Aspen is SO MUCH EASIER!!
I don't have to clean the whole viv every time a snake poos. I just scoop out the poo. Big time saver.

Ooh, even better, the dollar store. I must check that out.

I find dollar store crap to be...crap. Even if my dollar store does have them I'm sure they'll just melt in the dishwasher like the "silicone" spatulas we bought, lol.

I've been using those cutting mats for about 6 months now and washing them in the dishwasher. They are fine so far. In my mind, 6+ months is great for 50 cents. The Dollar Store is also where I get the majority of my hides, lay boxes, fake plants, and water dishes.
