A Sad and Good Day....

We(my family and me) have been moving for the last week. Been tiresome hauling stuff to the new house and cleaning up the old one(which is the one i'm at right now).

The sad thing is that yesterday we took our small dogs to the new house...and in a little while we'll be taking our border collies and one of our cats(the snakes and lizards will come tomorrow). Sad thing...is that my parents are thinking of giving my dog Athena whos a rottweiler/german shepherd mix to the humane society..saying that the land lord may not like her since shes such a big dog and that she might kill the neighbors cats.

I told my mom that if she gives Athena away she could atleast buy me the baby Kenyan Sand Boa at Tails N' Scales and possibly a baby male RTB...they could be considered as part of my b-day(which is this week) and mom said that'd be fine she could get them on friday whe we get feeders this friday(since she gets paid the day before on thursday).

I guess that'd work for me if she gave away Athena. I'd have my own squishie snake and i might get an RTB. But i'd miss Athena terribly shes my girl and all that mush. But i guess i'd have to since it isn't in my power to say what animal stays and what animal goes.

Well i'm going have yo finish up then head to the new house and then have to pick up my dad from work.

Seriously, an animal that gives so much pleasure/reward/enjoyment in every day life is far more appealing to me than a few snakes. I have had my 12 year old cat move with me all over the country. In fact, even when I wasn't allowed pets she came with me. I have done everything in my power to make sure that cat is with me till the day she dies. Hell I have been evicted over her!

I know its out with your control, but is there nothing you can do?

When my dad played the authority card, I moved away to Glasgow on my own @ 16 years old and made a new life for myself. I guess I'm just that passionate about my animals/commitments/life.

Tula- I really like to be like you but i guess i dont have the right stuff. Yes, Tier did die...took him back to John and John said he passed away of unknown causes...he was healthy when i gave to John but i don't know what happened after that.

I say keep working on your parents about your dog, rather than giving in so quickly in exchange for a few snakes. I realize you live under their roof, and in the end, what they say goes....but it just feels so wrong to me to just discard an animal that's been loyal to you. That, and an older, or larger dog is less likely to be adopted and are often just put down. That seems so unfair to me...that the other dogs go to the new house and this one is just brushed aside. Again...I'm not attacking you...I know it's your parents. But at the very least, if you can't get them to keep the dog, at least find it a new home rather than dumping it off at a shelter.

I know that if my parents tried to get rid of my husky, I'd take her and leave. If they agreed to let you have the dog in the first place, they made a full term commitment to take care of that animal until it dies.

I agree with everyone else. I know it's hard when your folks are pressurising you, but NOTHING in the world will ever take my animals away from me. I would do anything and go anywhere for them. I think you have a responsibility to any animal you take on and that remains as such until the animal's final moments.

You also say the landlord MAY not like her... why give up a beloved animal which relies on you on the off chance your new landlord may object to her? I'm not attacking you or trying to make you feel bad... but it just doesn't seem right. :shrugs:

My parents think I am stupid for making a life decision in regards to my pets. But what they do not realize is....they are my life. My mother hates my snakes. Won't even let me say the word snakes or their names. So I am moving out before I go to college. I stayed just enough here to save up college funds and I found a good place to go. I love my pets so much. Only sad thing is...my pet cat is not only mine. I will miss him so much! Work on your parents a bit more. I'd hate to hear that the other pets get to go but the older one is left behind. And good luck!

I'm so sorry for you, but I can't personally see how agreeing to have any kind of snakes instead of your dog would help. It may make your parents think you aren't that committed to the dog.
I'm a total softy, having agreed to take on my brother's cat when his new lease was no-pets, even though I really didn't want another cat, 'Bob' has a home here for life, unless my brother's circumstances change. When my youngest son got his leopard gecko, he knows that if he moves away to college later she'll be looked after here until he can take her on again. In our family, pets are for life, even our evil bitey gerbil lived a long life here

Seriously, dont feel bad. He WAS WC and WC asian vine snakes do not do well in captivity, i did say that. They are a terribly difficult species to look after without the hassle of WC specimens. I probably couldn't have done much better.
